Smoking in Film sets

I was a little puzzled to read on Teletext (page 116) about the East Enders tackling the smoking ban both on and off screen. You may know that in the storyline the ban is responsible for the pub being closed for redecoration and Dot`s struggle to give up. It says that should any of the cast need help to give up smoking, they will get it. But it goes on to say ``But they say they won`t operate a total smoking ban on set``.
I thought the ban covered all premises and even a notable live stage play (in Scotland) had to enforce it. Have I misread it?

It's just public spaces where it's banned, I think, and a film set is presumably a private space.

It is enclosed places of work, so presumably they will allow it in open air parts of the set.

It'll be banned in workplaces too so I would think film sets would be included.

The Smoke-free (Exemptions and Vehicles) Regulations 2007 states

"Performers
6. Where the artistic integrity of a performance makes it appropriate for a person who is taking part in that performance to smoke, the part of the premises in which that person performs is not smoke-free in relation to that person during his performance"

I should add those Regs apply only to England.

ah, that makes sense TCL, I was wondering if they would have to declare a film set to be someone's private home and only allow people in if they signed a waiver or something. So my 16-part series on major Virginian exports can go ahead?

Yes, the statement does make more sense now, especially if the rules differ for England. I was thinking of the ``set`` being the whole working area but if it is just the area being filmed, and they are allowed to, then of course the smoking issue would be included.
BTW if Brookside were still alive, they would have no problem as no-one smoked due to Phil Redmond`s personal hate.
