present problems
re violent teen offenders.... surely the people to shoulder most blame are the parents. 40 years ago there was trouble but not to this extent but then 1 parent worked and 1 looked after the children..now both work and the kids are left to their own devices uncontrolled and unsupervised. The parents should take more responsibility for their offspring or face dire consequenses

What do you expect a single parent on her own to do? hire a nanny? send them to boarding school?
You're talking about people who as often as not are trying to hold down a couple of jobs on minimum wage and trying to bring up a family with little or no help from others.
And you want to fine them - that'll help

Hi dfward, I agree with you, indeed parents should take more responsibility for their offspring. I can't help but think that if parents were not as indulgent with their children, it would help with discipline and behaviour issues. If children were rewarded for good behavior then they may well show more of it rather than just expect parents to buy them things on demand.
jake-the-peg mentions sending them to bed with no supper, and I appreciate how difficult is it to reason with teenagers. ( I used to foster them ) however it is dismaying to hear a parent assuring their child that the latest trainers, electronic games, sports wear, etc will be theirs as soon as pay day rolls round. It does parent or child no good to have such a lack of restraint. If parents are buying to cover a guilt complex as a result of them working it doesn't work !

flump 1... at last a sensible answer.. kids EXPECT to automatically get everything in life... this is not possible either through low income families or non caring families. Spend more time loving your children and they will return your love.. treat them like dirt and they will treat you and others likewise. Rich kids cause as many problems as less well off families .. why... cos their parents are more concerned with their careers than the future and wellbeing of their teens
It is to simplistic to say "blame the parents".
It is caused by a whole range of things.
More access to violent media (computer games, WWE wrestling, violent movies, TV)
Access to drugs and drink.
Society as a whole has got more violent, not just the kids.
Lack of things to do. Many youth clubs are closed, playing fields are being sold by the government, many kids are left to hang around on street corners and boredem sets in.
Children "growing up" quicker.
It is not just one thing, parents, it is a whole range of things.

To a certtain extent, I can agree with you vhg, but who is it who allows children to watch programmes after the watershed, buys then adult and sexualised clothing etc, the parents.
Its parents that teach children the rules of life, and should keep a watch on nearly all aspect of their growing up, to ensure they become mature, responsible adults.

This concept about only one parent working.
This has only ever been a middle class phenomena. Historically The upper classes didn't work but then neither parent actually brought up the child, this was left to employed staff. The middle classes, where the patriarchal belief system was supported by notions of snobbery. If you look at advertisements in the women's magazines you will see they depict women being almost orgasmic ally happy about some new bloody washing machine. However working class mothers worked and worked bloody hard out of the family home as well as in it. In fact latch key kids were those of 40 years ago
Surely you do not think that all the bright sparks of today, politicians, sociologists, criminologists, child behaviourists, police etc etc, who can not come up with one simplistic answer , might have considered you point of view and discounted it as the solution. They probably like most right minded people realise the problems are complex and multi layered requiring many different responses.
And what are dire consquences?

It isn't too simplistic to say blame the parents.
My other half works with and teaches special needs/social services cases. The majority of the parents are unmarried mothers who cannot cope with their children hence social services are involved. They went on a trip last week and over half the mothers were pregnant again. Can't cope with one so have four.
So exactly who is to blame for that? It's a never ending circle, but the reality is we have a social underclass, bang a kid out, get benefits, let them run riot, bang another out, repeat indefinately.
