October 8 was the deadline when all businesses employing five or more people, which didn't already have a pension scheme in place, had to have a stakeholder pension scheme set up for their workers - or risk a fine of up to 50,000. It's estimated that up to 300,000 employers have ignored the new legislation. If you think your employer is selling you short, you can contact the Occupational Pensions Regulatory Authority (Opra) by: phone (01273-627600), email ([email protected]), fax (01273-627688), or post (Opra, Invicta House, Trafalgar Place, Brighton BN1 4DW). Opra will not use your name in its communications with the employer.
