Do you think that a law to make it illegal to smack your own child would be of benefit to society? And also, how could such a law be policed?

I was smacked very occasionally as a child, and I don't think it did me any harm, although I believe it was the disapproval and shame involved that were the actual deterrents. The law against smacking would really be there to prevent excessive smacking, i.e. parents who really beat their kids. Unfortunately, I fear these types would carry on doing it whether it was illegal or not.
