.....do you still think ID cards are a good idea.

25 Million individual's records and 7 1/4 Million families records all lost (maybe stolen). Data contained information such as names, dates of births and national insurance numbers and even bank account details.

Would you be happy if all your biometric data was lost?

I am one of the people whose details have been lost. I refuse to panic over this as there is no evidence that the details have fallen into the hands of criminals.
I am still in favour of national ID cards.
If we constantly worried about our details being misused we would all live like hermits and keep our money under the mattress instead of in a bank.

I work in computers, and I know that it doesn't matter how good your security is if people do not follow procedures.

All it takes is a junior member of staff, cutting corners and your whole system could be compromised.

After reading this story, surely the idea of a centralized ID system is much less appealing.

I've never found the idea of ID cards very appealing and I find it even less appealing now!

ID cards wont achieve a thing and given the govts record with large scale it contracts the costs will spiral out of control

I've made a number of posts pointing out this very objection to a national DNA database too.

And when the security services say national ID cards wouldn't be of any use to them you begin to see that it's an expensive white elephant whose purpose is questionable and likely to be counter productive!

Especially as you'll only need to have one if you're a British Citizen.

My wife's Irish - maybe I'll take Irish citizenship and tell them to stuff their ID card!

What i'd like to know is why Alistair Darling is being blamed for this.At no time was he in actual possession of these lost disks,it was some junior official idiot who lost them.Hopefully the t**t got the sack immediately.His/her boss has already resigned. Also why are we just hearing about this a month after it actually happened?

If you are a disgruntled employee who is about to lose his/her job with little compensation, then wouldn't it be appealing to get revenge by 'losing' these disks and watch the drama unfold?

It was pointed out this morning that if they have fallen into the hands of fraudsters then they will sit on the information for a few months, then use them when the furor has died down.

The government's main reason for introducing ID cards is to combat terrorism. Regarding the most recent terrorist attacks in Britain, every one of the scum involved would have held a valid ID card.
