Why are people so horrible?

Last night about midnight the people in the flat next to us appeared to start having a party, loud music, banging on the walls and shouting. This continued until 6am when my boyfriend got so pi55ed off at not being able to sleep he rang the police. The police turned up, we could hear there was a bit of an argument, the police said if they had to come back they would knock the door down, they turned the music off and the police left. Then it started up again 10 minutes later!
My boyfriend didn't want to ring the police again as we think they know it was us and don't really want a group of horrible louts pi55ed off at us.
But why are people so horrible? Is it reasonable to be so loud all through a sunday night? Why shout at the police? Why then turn it back on after being told to be quiet? I just don't understand why people are so horrible. It really depresses me as I live in a nice blobk of apartments but I suppose it doesn't matter where you go you will still find scum.
So why are these people just to horrible?

Ring the Environmental Health 24hr number in the future, they will do more than the Police, in my experience.
Hi Emu,

How long have your neighbours lived there. I had problems a few years ago but it went on for over a year. The council had her prosecuted but she still carried on with the music.

Some people are very selfish and ignorant of their surroundings. The trouble is you can't reason with the unreasonable.
Emu, I know exactly what you are going through. The stories I could tell you about where I live would curl your hair (or straighten it depending on it's natural state!). I live in a rather unpleasant part of Hertfordshire and the estate that I moved into 10 years ago had a reputation of being a bit rough but was supposedly much improved. I was desperate to get my own place though as at the time my ex and I were living at my Mum's house and we didn't have any room nor privacy. I digress....when we moved in, we were conscious of the fact that we were now living in very close proximity to other people and we were careful not to make too much noise and not slam doors and just generally be considerate of all our neighbours.

At first, everything was going quite well - people seemed to be considerate of one another and the neighbourhood was reasonably quiet. In my immediate block, there are 6 flats and it soon became apparent that one flat in particular was trouble.

It started off with a man who was obviously an alcoholic who would stagger home in the wee small hours of the morning and start ringing everyones doorbells because he'd locked himself out. We all got wise to it and switched our doorbells off, but the trouble then with that was that he would then stand outside and start shouting and yelling until one of us gave in and let him in.

We were relieved when he left, but his replacement was a junkie/prostitute/general all round dodgy piece of work who made life miserable for the rest of us. She used to fill the flat with undesirables and the grounds outside were littered with hypodermic needles and drug paraphernalia. At one point she moved her brother, his girlfiend and their great Dane into the (one bedroom) flat with her and they in turn used to then invite their friends in and generally make as much noise as possible. TBC

The dog used to get loose and defecate in the public areas and excrement and urine was left lying on the floors indefinitely. Some of the neighbours on occasion found themselves rather cornered by the dog which wouldn't bother me greatly, but one of my neighbours is terrified of dogs. TBC

It got to the point that living there was making us all ill. The police were constantly raiding the flat and kept ringing our doorbells to be let into the building - and it was never during waking hours but always when you were fast asleep.

I can't tell you the amount of times that she was arrested only to be released and sent back to the flat. In the end, she did a moonlight flit - or so it seems but later reports have suggested that she in fact overdosed and died. The trouble with her going though was that we then ended up with squatters in the flat who believe it or not were worse than she was. On one Saturday I answered the doorbell three times to police! On another occasion, I witnessed someone jumping out of the flat window (first floor) to escape the police and so it went on and on and on.

The council didn't want to know about the situation and the police did nothing to alleviate the fears that the rest of us had. We were all too frightened to tell these people to behave or keep the noise down for fear of God knows what.

Eventually though, the squatters were removed and someone decent moved in........or so we thought! She now has two big dogs living in the flat with her that bark incessantly and if you say anything to her she goes hysterical and starts screaming and shouting.

Sorry....TBC again!
The downstairs flat was occupied by (another) alcoholic who has managed to kill himself through drink but not before he nearly set fire to the block and not before he got in with a dodgy crowd who to this day use his flat as a doss house.

This really doesn't begin to cover the situation....this is only a brief description of what has happened in my little block of 6 flats. We are adjacent to a further 21 flats and some of the residents there are horrific in particular one groundfloor flat is occupied by a couple who tend to have parties whenever it takes their fancy but in particular during the summer when the weather is good and they can spill out onto the communal grassy area outside the flats. They are a vile bunch and make me feel as though I am an intruder when I'm trying to simply walk into my flat. I dread the summer time not only because the neighbours seem to get particularly obnoxious, but they tend to let their kids run riot too.

Just last week my neighbour had his gas meter kicked in because he'd dared to tell some kids off.

Emu, I'm afraid that there are a majority of people who are kind and considerate of others but the minority who couldn't give a rats @rse are just so vile and so prominent that it seems as though everyone is just as horrid.

I dream of being able to sell my flat and move away from there.....preferably somewhere where there are no other people or at least where there is more space and we aren't all crammed in like sardines. The Hebrides should suffice!

I'm sorry to have rambled on......I guess I just needed to get it off my chest. Good luck with your lot - I hope that they start to consider the fact that they are living in a flat surrounded by others....but I rather doubt it.

I had the same thing a few years ago when my neighbours played loud music and had very loud sex.

I went out one day and left the TV on a music channel as loud as possible. Told my neighbours theother side and they went out too.

Went home hours later and they complained so I just said I assumed as thay did it it was OK!!

Never happened again.
I used to live next door to a family that had 5 teenagers and 2 large dogs. The noise from 5 different stereos/mixing machines was horrendous. When they went out, the dogs howled constantly. Having a polite word with them did no good at all.The whole family were benefit scroungers who stayed in bed all day and made noise all night. After one particularly bad night I made my daughter stand by one bedroom wall and practice her violin. When we went out at 8.00am I left one ghetto blaster against a bedroom wall playing Radio 3 full belt, and did the same in another bedroom with some screechy Asian music on full. They got the message, although I had to repeat it about once a month.
lol at Mrs O
Im glad our in a couner house and our nextdoord hardly make any noise!!
But we do have a whole load of very dodgy looking people hanging around in the area - they should all be exterminated if you ask me!!
I live next door to a moronic young couple. They play music and computer games till 3 in the morning. They also don't seem to understand how the communual rubbish bins outside the block of flats work. Instead of lifting the lid up and putting the rubbish inside they just dump all their rubbish on top of the lid so the binmen refuse to take it. They also just tread all over everyone's letters and parcels (often in wet, muddy shoes) whereas the rest of us put the post on the hall table. What gets me is that it would take zero effort to put the post on the table or lift the rubbish bin lid up - grrrrr!

2 Points to consider.

1) The police have no power to knock the door down in this situation.

2) Hats off to your boyfriend for waiting 6 hours to finally lose his rag. I would last, errrrrrrrrrrr, about 34 seconds.

My advice,

Form a consortium in the flats and fins the loudest stereo possible. When it is convient to ALL the residence turn the volume and bass up full and place the speakers against the wall.

Day time will be fine and just leave it until the offenders see sense.

Opera will be a good choice of play, as I can safely assume there is little culture in the genes of such neighbours.

Fire with fire is the only way to reason.
Nice one B.B . !!!! If those people had to get up to work and not live on the benefits system they would have more respect for the neighbours . Emu 2005 have you thought about asking the council if they want to buy your flat ? Good luck .
Katejess44, you dont live in Stevenage by any chance do you!? lol!
People are scum.

And I am misanthropic by nature.

Therefore I moved to the country, and have no neighbours. And I have to say I couldn't recommend it highly enough.

However, as this isn't usually an option, I'd follow Bewlay's advice, and then compound it with a drill at 3am.

Hi Emu and others who have responded here. People like the ones described in this thread should be rounded up, put into a large field and shot!! I really feel for all those who suffer from noise nuisance like this, why should decent people who try to live and let live, have to suffer with inbeciles like these? Luckily for me, we have considerate neighbours and I only once had a brief problem with a neighbours teenage son, who whilst his parents were out working, would put on the radio very loudly during the daytime. As I work from home for most of the day, this was infuriating when I was trying to concentrate! I asked him to turn it down and he did so, but the noise level crept back up again over the next few days. Luckily the family moved house out a few weeks later so I did not have to take further steps to try to get the noise level down. My new neighbours are as quiet as mice and very nice people, but I do count my blessings. Emu, I really hope that this was a one off and not to become a regular occurrance, if it does, I would try to contact En Health as advised by others for further advice. Best of luck, Sue

Hi everyone - thanks for all your answers, it seems most people have it worse than me so I shouldn't moan too much.
We rent our flat so can always move if it gets worse, it just really gets me how people are so horrible!
Hermia - can you retaliate by walking over their post and putting their rubbish outside their flat? If it's communal that won't really help though...
Anyway I hope everyone else's problems get better, and I will be ringing environmental health next time and I'm also going to e-mail the management company of the flats, I doubt the people who rent them the flat will be pleased they've had the police called on them.
Thanks again for all your answers :-)
