Voluntary Work when you're claiming jobseeker's allowance
2 Answers
If you're claiming contributions based jobseeker's allowance, are you allowed to do voluntary work or will that affect your benefits? Just thought if nothing comes along while you're looking for full time work, it might be good to do voluntary work (something to do!) and may look good on your CV too! I would have thought that if you did do voluntary work they'd allow you time off for interviews etc so its not as if you've stopped looking full stop. But wasn't sure exactly what the deal was ... Know they do say you have to tell them if you do voluntary work but wasn't sure what the outcome would be. Has anyone gone through this before and knows the answer?

Hi, here is the guidance from Volunteering England.
Job Seekers Allowance
People on JSA can do as much voluntary work as they want as long as they remain available for and are actively seeking work. This will mean that they will have to show that they are looking for work and applying for jobs where appropriate. If an individual is volunteering, then they are entitled to 48 hours notice if they are asked to attend an interview, and a weeks notice before starting work. These are concessions to the 24 hour notice normally allowed.
I hope this helps. It' s a great idea to volunteer whilst looking for work. Not only does it broaden your experience, it will also boost your confidence and as you rightly say, enhance your CV. Speak to your local volunteer centre (can be found on Volunteering England website) or wisit www.do-it.org.uk.
Best of Luck!
