'Hero' pilot.

The pilot of the small plane that crashed into the housing estate last week has been hailed 'a hero' for aiming to avoid the houses.
Now call me cynical but if I were the pilot of that plane, I would be trying to find open space to land the plane safely, so that I may survive! The fact that he was steering the plane away from the houses towards the open space was more about trying to land the plane,saving himself and the passengers. The result that he only hit one house was just incidental, wasn't it?

and the butt of some pretty tasteless jokes to....let me quote a saying......there but for the grace of god go i.....you never know whats round the corner it wouldnt be so funny then eh?if something tragic like this happened a bit closer to home.

One joke I think and one quote. Obviously upset you a lot. Does making a joke, or even quoting an ironic line as I did and not making it up, mean a person cannot have sympathy over a tragedy?
I understand what you are saying. I am not unfeeling and you have no knowledge of the tragedy in my life.

Death happens, humour happens and sometimes they overlap.

i agree with Le Chat, if youre gonna crash, why crash into a brick built house if theres a big open field ???

ok, the man DID deserve some respect for his actions and he died doing his job.
but to call him a hreo, is in my opinion, a bit of a tall order.

but, good on the man for trying to save himself and his passengers.

rabbitygirl we all have a story to tell and we all have dealt with tragedies in life,no doubt some are worse than others and i have a great sense of humour and indeed,humour has seen me through some of MY darkest days but certainly not at the expense of another persons loss.

Leaving aside the jokes for a minute..
Correct me if I'm wrong leChat, but there was no criticism of the pilot in the question.
It was more a criticism of the way the media always try to 'sex up' these kind of stories by introducing a heroic element (or scapegoat/villain) into the mix.
As Quizmonster says, the truth is more straightforward, just a man in a difficult situation doing his best to save himself and everyone else involved.

A family friend was a pilot and died in a helicopter crash. It was later found to be a mechanical fault. When that happens, there is little or no control over the aircraft. he managed to bypass a house he was on a collision course with and landed in open ground. He and co-pilot died doing this. He would have said he was just doing his job, but he has never been forgotten.
