Are our streets really safe, or should the Goverment now be issuing us all with Stab-Proof vests, as they did with Gas-Masks in WW2?
Incidently isn't it against the law to impersonate a Police Officer?

or she may know that this is China Dolls old stomping ground, and she was wearing precautionary clothing to be on the safe side.

Reminds me whne Lady Di (bless her lovely heart) was campaigning against land mines and she wore her ballistic vest for the PR shoot.
However, unlike Di, ALL the Labour party deserve a painful death, and I mean real pain. So yes, it was a good idea. If somebody hates them as much as I do, but without the morality or law-abiding lifestyle I lead, I am sure she would be stabbed, hopefully through the eyes first when there is no protection.
She looks pathetic, she will never be stabbed when she is guarded by coppers, and I bet she thinks in her marxist and evil world she looks cool.
Never been to Peckham but there were riots in Only Fools and Horses, so it can't be that nice a place.
Booster Girl, I saw Goldie Hawn on Jonathan Ross a few weeks ago and she looked pretty good with her face paint on.

Wearing a stab vest is just the kind of dumb thing politicians tend to do for image/publicity reasons. I sincerely doubt she's actually wearing it for protection.
It might also need considering that she had to wear it under some regulation or other (as I think police officers have to). In either case, I still don't think it was out of fear for her safety.
On the more interesting wider issue of 'are our streets safe?'
this chart from the British Crime Survey (which takes into account estimates on unreported crime) indicates that overall crime has decreased in recent years.
this country-comparison by NationMaster lists the UK as 18th out of 60 for recent murders (which isn't very good but if you look at the numbers it's much better than others on the list. Plus consider the size of several of the comparison countries).
Rather less positively, however, NM does rank us 3rd out of 60 in 'Total Crimes'.
The Home Office site also testifies to a rise in crime, but it needs to be remembered that the HO only considers convictions - it doesn't take into account unreported crime. So it actually testifies to a higher rate of conviction.
So the evidence indicates that while things aren't exactly great on the crime front, they're not nearly as bad as they could be or are made out to be.

"Mr Hague then referred to Ms Harman's difficulties over her decision to wear an anti-stab jacket during a police walkabout this week on the streets of her south London constituency. He noted that she had said she dressed appropriately for every occasion - wearing a hard hat on building site visits etc. He asked whether she attended Cabinet dressed as a clown."
