i applaud the father of the youth who has just received a three years jail sentence after informing the police that he had a gun i suppose his son will now disown his father but as his father said this could have led to a greater sentence if he had not done this if his son had shot someone at point other wise what's was the gun to be used for

No - can you really imagine anyone in their wrong mind (not a typo) thanking his dad for informing on him?
People like us do not think like gun-toting kids.
We can see common sense because we have common sense...but to expect our though processes to be universally accepted...the world just isn't like that.

Fully applaud the father.
However, should he have got 3 years? He was holding the gun for other people (in fact he hadn't touched it - it was bagged and sealed). He hasn't informed on those people since his life would be in jeopardy if he did.
What has been gained from sending him to prison? Is it a message to people scared into holding a gun?
What about if you found a gun in your child's room - would you call the police and have your child put away for three years, or dispose of the gun and try and talk sense into your child?
