As i said earlier, I cannot quit on willpower alone. I have tried it and nearly killed my other half after 1 day. I have been through homelessness; someone trying to murder me and various other incidents in life. I tried to give up then, could not do it. I know that my brain needs chemical help to get off the nicotine but it is merely finding the right drug first.

To Grumpy80 I would have thought with all the bad conditions you have got you would have given up quite easily.Don't you think of your family and your wife that you may not be here much longer if you carry on.You have got every reason to give up.I myself have smoked and tried for years to stop but when my first grandson was born 11 years ago I felt like a leper having to go out of the room for a fag and that was when I thought well I want to see my grandchildren grow up.If you have something to do it for you will do it otherwise you are not trying very hard .You don't need anything to help you stop just think of how bad it makes you and the money you will save.
Wendilla,
I have tried to give up cold turkey - which by the way is the wrong way to give up anything as it can make things worse for your body! I am in a female/female relationship and the other half has said (after 5 attempts) that I am not to quit that way or she will move out!
I have tried many other ways but to no avail. I have been advised by my GP and Consultants various that the only way they will give me any further help to quit smoking is for me to try Champnix. However, I will not be allowed to have that until I have recovered fully mentally as there are several side effects that could be quite disconcerting for those around me.

Yes I agree with you on the above post but in your position health wise you just need to be that bit stronger as I said I have smoked for years till 11 years ago.I found it very difficult to stop the more I tried the more I smoked but you have to get into your head that you are doing it for you and your health.I have never looked back as I want to see my grandchildren grow up and I did find I was getting a bit breathless but that is ok now.It is not a case of IF I CAN DO IT SO CAN YOU .you do it for you and you seemed to have got over the drink problem so now go ahead and master the smoking. Good Luck
