copyright laws and please dont sue me!

I have always had a keen interest in graphic art and have recently been think ing about starting a business/career selling some of my work and designs. One issue that has arose is that one of the thing i was interesed in selling was images using legendary rock bands names and logos or designs using the memeber faces or symbols. I realised that i would be at risk of some sort of trademark or copyright infringement and wondered what i would need to do in order to get the permission of the artist, or indeed if this is possible?, how i would go go about this and also making sure that my designs are safe and copyrighted? (any other tips people may have on starting a business of this sort would also be gretaly appreciated)
