it should but it can't afford to. For one thing, it's spending so much money on invading a couple of countries of its own that it's expended both financial and moral capital. The flashpoint is that Geogia wants to join Nato and Russia doesn't want it to. Nato members should welcome it and offer it all the help they can. But they'd sooner sit and wring their hands. Cheaper, doncha know.

There's oil in Georgia isn't there? Anyway I believe Condoleeza Rice has asked Russia to stop the aggression and for mediators to be brought in. Fat lot of good that'll do!

I think it's really sad what's happening in Georgia. To think it's only twelve years ago that they were hosting the Olympic games in Atlanta. Such a shame.

yes the west should intervene its the same situation as iraq etc etc,george bush does not need much of an excuse,now i dont agree with this theory at all....but is there any oil in georgia?is there ANYTHING there that can be of benefit to the usa?...this could tip the world towards something that has not been seen before... a real face off between the worlds 2 superpowers not seen since the cuban missile crisis in the 60s............

thanx scotgal,i think if the russians dont stop this invasion asap the sh*t will really hit the fan it will be interesting to see who backs the us up on this one,gordon brown needs all the support he can get at the moment can he really afford to send more uk troops into a theatre of war?i dont think so so it looks like relations between the us and the uk could become strained who else will back the u.s?i think they may have to go it alone on this one and if they do i dont think they will do much in the way of military intervention...just my humble opinion of course......

2 superpowers face to face, not one of them would back down. It could very well end up in a world conflict.

I think relations between Bush and Gordie has always been a bit strained because Brown's his own man and he most certainly won't be a puppet to Bush who I think is one dangerous dude. There are some powerful guys pulling his strings (think Dick Cheney CEO of Halliburton one of the biggest global oil & gas producers)

make no mistake that the u.s army has enough troops to deploy to georgia and that is without any other countries help they might enlist,but who needs thousands upon thousands of troops when george bush has an itchy nuclear button finger....dont forget his term of office is up in november his presidency has been a war torn one for sure do you really think going to war with russia would bother him?...i for 1 dont think it would for 1 moment...

Its amazing how many prejudiced people cannot see the woods for the trees. Just ask yourself who is arming Georgia to teeth? Who is siting star wars missiles in Poland and Czechislovakia? What do these so called defences have in common and which countries are being targeted by them? Strange enough they are on the borders of Russia! Does Russia have reason to retaliate?

rov1200 have the u.s.a stated that they are targetting russia?the star wars programme has been on the agenda for decades this is a missile defence system...not an attack orientated system russia is the aggressor in this situation no better than when iraq invaded kuwait..the u.s.a boasts 1 and a half million troops plus reservists so they are more than equipped to go to the area....but at what cost?

When the Russians wanted to put missiles on Cuba the USA reacted so violently it nearly led to WWIII. Now the ball is on the other foot and we expect Russia to remain docile?
