It is a continent of 53 countries. Africa is a huge continent and these countries are very different typographically.
Some countries fare better than others, mainly because some African countries have very little natural resources to trade and suffer drought.
Other African countries are suppressed by its neighbouring countries.
Some African people are suffering from bad governments.
Whatever the reason, some African children are starving to death, through no fault of their own.
However, it is your money to do with as you please.

i also give my spare change to my chosen charities, it makes me feel a lot better about myself.
i too never give to african charities either, bob geldof put me off for a start with his ranting and raving and downright rude begging for our money.
the world is over populated and food supplies are short, surely some people dying is natures way of controlling the population? if we artifically keep people alive is that not going to cause further problems down the line?

I must admit also to vetting where my small change goes, i do a lot of motor trade work for some charities and I can tell you , there are some big cars being driven about , anyway i decided years ago too that Africa was old and strong enough to look after itself, we often have images forced upon us of children with flies buzzing round them and families living in mud huts, thats there life style, its what there used to, Too much meddling from us gets them houses and then starts the " I have to work to pay the bills" syndrome which we all know , the bulk of them are just happy the way they are , the african countries should support themselves instead of getting wrapped up in religious dogma.
Luckyman - I don't know you at all and have no idea of your upbringing or childhood.
However, you have the opportunity to read the news - online or in print, and find facts for yourself. The internet is a wealth of information.
Aid to one African country does not help another African country.
One African country can suffer drought for years, and the next time it is in the news, it could be a different African country.
Wheat is so very expensive in the UK, and worldwide, at the moment for two reasons: drought has caused a shortage and many, many traditional wheat growing farms (farms in the wide sense, millions of acres) are now growing crops for bio-diesel instead of food.
I never for one moment even hinted at any racism on your part.

I have to admit that I'd rather poke my eyes out than give to Oxfam, however I do give to other charities helping in Africa, as although yes, the composite countries of the African continent do often require assistance, but whoever's fault that is ( often no-one's) or however it has happened, it is NOT the fault of the babies and small children who are dying. Life is precious and if I can help save it then I will, irrespective of the fact that I don't like some regimes, dislike the religous persuasion of some charities and downright hate the way I'm pounced upon in the street by 'charity muggers'.
As to your upbringing and education luckyman, once you're an adult how your life goes from there is up to you. I wasn't brought up under very happy circumstances but (eventually) I decided that I wanted to be educated, wanted to learn and be able to understand things and in my 20's took a degree course. You don't have to do that, go that far, all you have to do is look around, converse with people and read everything you can.

I am with GucciMan. I never give money to charities for Africa. I believe that we should try and help the people in our own country first. There are people here that are homeless and starving as well so I would rather help them first. I think more than enough money has been poured into the African nations and if we keep bailing them out then they will never learn to survive on their own. If we saved all the children in the world that were starving then the whole planet would go into a crisis as there would be too many people and not enough food to go round. You dont see people like Oxfam and Red Cross helping in this country when we had all the floods and people were left homeless... P.S And I have got an education.

Don't you think we pay more than enough in taxes to make charity in the UK unnecessary? Do you think that the more charities spend on essentials in the UK means more money in the government coffers that they should be spending on people in need?
I am sure I am currently paying for at least two UK children in the amount of taxes I pay.
I am closely involved with a homeless charity in the Midlands. I've seen plenty of people in need, a few a bit hungry. None starving.

No I dont think we pay enough to make charity unnecessary. I am surprise that you bother to work with a charity if that is your attitude. There are people that starve to death in the country it is just that it does not make good TV so you dont hear about it. There was a little girl in the news a few weeks ago that starved to death in a flat in this country. I would rather help her than people in Africa. In a civilised country (which we are supposed to be), no one should be homeless or go hungry.
Many african countries are led by Despots like Mugabe now being replaced by Mbeke in Zimbabwe (previously Rhodesia.....breadbasket of Africa). Note how fat and well fed the leaders are........they take ur charity money for weapons while their populations starve.
G8 (world leaders bleat...to no avail) So UK hands tied unless supported by G8.

There is also lots of corruption within many of these African countries. I don't know how funds are administered by charities?
Recently, I watched a programme over a couple of weeks, called Millionaires Mission, where a group of millionaires from the UK went to a rural village in an East African country and with their own money planned to build a hotel, schools etc, which would in turn give education and jobs to the villagers.
The project from start to end was difficult as few of the villagers would actually work on the project, which would benefit them, unless they were paid. There was no way of getting through to them, that a hotel for travellers, would bring money to the village, and a co-operative that was set up, to sell local produce to the bigger towns, would also bring in money for all.
I get the impression, with so many languages, tribal factions, there is little that can be done to help many of the poorer African countries. For the west to be able to help, the Governments of these countries need to be working towards the same goals, which is often not the case.

BagpussAA - that child didn't starve to death because of financial poverty. She died because of child neglect and cruelty, and no amount of money given to a charity could have stopped that happening. Her mother chose to let her starve.
Some people are homeless through choice, whether you believe that or not is up to you.
Some are hungry because they choose to spend what money they do have on drink, drugs or gambling.
In this country, it is the government's responsibility to alleviate homelessness and human suffering - campaign to make them do it.

Africa's plight, and that of several other third world countries is a desperate and sad one. But recognise that as I do, I'm also aware that there are a great many other needy people and animals in this world and my spare cash will only go so far. If we only gave to Africa charities, then our own country would be in a pretty sorry state too and none of us would be in a position to help anyone.
i think youll find its in the "wests" interests for poor developing countries to remain "poor" and developing. when it comes to a topic like this - its all very political.
for example - here we are saying to the world "dont create more pollution" - and theres an LEDC wanting to industrialise - but unable to because of pressure from MEDC's for them to watch how much pollution they create. This is a VERY basic way of explaining it - its alot more complicated than that i, and a load of other people can assure you.
plus - there isnt really any gurentee that any aid given to a country actually gets there. if the government is corrupt, or there isnt one and its run by militias, then no matter how much generous people throw money at them, they wont use the money / aid to help the people.
well thats my 2 pence! lol :P
