Sorry to say I wouldn't have noticed myself - what distresses me is that now we've had the olympics we'll go into post olympic mode right the way through to pre olympic 2012 mode without drawing breath. A bit like England winning the world cup. It was 42 years ago - get over it!!!
Well, the cheek eh!

Come on., get a life.!!!

I mean, not that this is important in the big scheme of things anyway but looking at the photo the flag was probably the right way up and she just flipped it over her shoulders.
She has won Britians first womans gold medal in swimming for 40 years.

She has won 2 swimming gold medals at the Olympics, the first British girl to do that for 100 years.

And all you can do is moan she has the flag upside down.

You are pathetic.
I'm afraid I must be equally as pathetic as theoldgit seems to you, although for different reasons.

I would not have noticed this myself, not because I do not know the right way to display the Union Flag - I most certainly do. I would have missed it because I immediately ignore anything to do with the Olympics. To me just about the only things worth noticing are things like this. The entire charade has been one big yawn. I lost what little interest I might have had when I learned of the fake fireworks and children miming at the beginning. I cannot imagine what they will dream up for the (the mercifully imminent) closing ceremony. Gordon Brown miming to a Boris Johnson recording, perhaps?

The so-called news consists of twenty minutes of Olympic drivel in every half hour bulletin. And, as scotgirl points out, weve now got four years to be told how wonderful it all was, how London cannot possibly stage the event so extravagantly when its our turn, and how we cannot possibly hope to achieve the level of success weve managed in Peking.

As for calling the United Kingdoms entrants Team GB anyone got a pail I can spew up into?
I agree with New Judge. All i can think of when spectacles like firework displays etc are staged are all the ways the money could be better employed.
Haven't you got anything more important to lose sleep over ? . Lighten up for christ sake !!!

You sound as if you would still moan if you lost a fiver and found a tenner

There is no need to be so rude vehelpfulguy, why could you just not just answer my post without, being so nasty?

Incidently I myself consider the respect of our national flag to be more important, than a few elite individuals, taking part in a sport of minority interest, in the quest to try and win some Gold- plated medal.

You are no better Postdog, what is it with you people? You are so aggressive.

Having said that I get your point, about the flipping over of the flag, maybe.

Let's blame the Daily Mail for this one then. One for also not noticing it, and consequently for printing it.

Dear oh dear .....I am not really interested in the Olympics but it really distresses me that some people can nit pick about something like this .
Well done to this girl .She's won a gold medal for her country .
I'm sure she is so pleased to have won and so excited and all you are doing is demeaning her efforts just because she has got a flag upside down .

She's a nineteen year old girl for goodness sake ..she must be over the moon let alone worrying about whether she has a flag in the correct position.
Crikey I would run her in for treason when she gets back .
Lock her in the Tower .Off with her head !
Pathetic.
Swimming isn't a minority interest .In my area we have a lot of very good swimmers. Some of whom could very well become Olympic champions of the future .And it isn't an elitist sport .Anyone can learn to swim !
To deride any sport whatever it is is very small minded .
You ought to go for a swim now and again it might release some of the tension and stress you obviously feel .Then you could wave your flag more easily .
Swimming eases the joints and stops you being a stuffed shirt .
I'm only aggressive when people deserve it.

But don't take it to heart, as I see far more ridiculous posts on this site every day........especially from greenies.
To New Judge and Bathsheba.

Both of you have really missed the point. I appreciate it if you are not fans of sport but to say that you lost interest because they didn't have real fireworks and the little girl mimed is a very crass statement.

Now call me picky but I believe the Olympic Games is about sport and the magnificent performances of the worlds best athletes. So to lose interest because of the aforementioned perceived shortcomings would be pathetic in the extreme.

As far as the original question is concerned, I can't believe that anyone could be so nit-picking as to criticise a multiple gold medal winner for the way she holds our flag. You probably didn't watch much of the actual sport but if you did you would have noticed that many flags held behind the athlete ended up upside down because they were the correct way up when they were turned over.

I do know which way the flag should be displayed but I would bet my house that Rebecca Adlington doesn't know and probably (rightly) cares even less.

When you have won Olympic gold medals then you may be qualified to pass judgement. Until then I would keep quiet.
Surely we can forgive her this minor error. After all, she has managed to achieve this olympics success as well as undertaking important duties such as housework, washing up, ironing and of course cooking for her family.

Well done Becky!

.She's won a gold medal for her country

No she hasn't she has won a 'gold plated medal' for herself.

just because she has got a flag upside down .

A perfectly true observation. Not just any flag, but our (or at least my) national flag, a serious breach of practice.

She's a nineteen year old girl for goodness

No excuse whatsoever. You are patronizing the young and her gender.

Swimming isn't a minority interest .In my area

Oh so the majority of people in your area are interested in swimming, I doubt this exaggerated statistic very much.

And it isn't an elitist sport .Anyone can learn to swim

If you had read my post correctly, you should have noticed that I referred to the individuals themselves, and not to their sport.

The rest of your post is once again silly childish insults, more fitting an elementary level of discussion.
Maybe i didn't make myself clear, Lucy. I was referring to firework displays in general- i have no idea what happened at the Olympic ceremony because i haven't watched one minute of it.
I haven't watched the Olympics and have even less interest in the flag issue.

But, whatever your views on the staging of the event and the fall out from it the individuals who have take part have worked extremely hard to get there and deserve at least a 'nod' of acknowledgement for their achievements.

I would hope that Rebecca Adlington et al are too busy enjoying their personal moments of glory to worry about such things. And rightly so.
Hmm...........gold medal winner with flag upside down.....or.........loser with flag the correct way up ?

It's a tricky one...........
It was the right way up, but then the wind dropped and it fell behind her.
Firetracie says he or she hopes Rebecca et al are too busy enjoying their personal moments of glory.

You bet they are!

From what I hear the Olympic village is a positive orgy of young hormonal athletes - particularly the swimmers. They always finish their events first, and party the rest of the time.

Imagine the stamina of these excellent physical specimens.
Now I really do see why my wife went to live abroad... the girl did well for god's sakes, stop bl00dy moaning about inconsequential rubbish and be proud of the fact she put all the hard work in to get it.
Gold- gold plated... never heard such nitpicking rubbish in my life... go and worry about something important please, you clearly have too much time on your hands.
Well, Lucy, I said I lost what very little interest I might have had. The issue of the fireworks and miming did not add anything to my disinterest, but merely confirmed what I had already thought that the whole business is an expensive charade.

Indeed the individuals did work hard to achieve their medals. However, their efforts would have been better placed elsewhere. Being able to swim up and down a swimming pool quicker than anybody else does not really make a huge contribution to the well being of mankind. It is quite obvious that some people can run, swim, jump or throw things better than others. Quite why its necessary to stage elaborate events such as the Olympics to prove such a thing is beyond me. Still, if it keeps a few folk happy...

No more from me on what looks like becoming a protracted thread!
