Sorry - catching up after lunch.
I think that crime is a multi-organed creature. To lay the blame on one single facet of the criminal doesn't make any sense.
Should we ignore every other factor when we look at the background of criminals? Family background? Educational attainment? Drug use? Stabilising factors (father at home, religious standing etc)?
If poverty isn't a factor, why are there so few middle class bank robbers, muggers, pickpockets?
Let's not confuse 'excuse' with 'source' though. I'm not saying that poverty should be considered an excuse, but it's one of many sources.
One other thing...in my opinion, the biggest factor behind what turns someone into a criminal is poor education. If you leave school and go to a technical college, or a with a fistful of A levels, you are less likely to turn to crime, because you have options.
Options are the key, not your racial background.
My opinion...I have no stats to back this up.
