It is one of the reasons we are a civilised country and the reason the like of Zimbabwe and the Arab states cannot make such a claim.
Our law, rightly so, does not accept evidence that is obtained under torture. Apart from the fact that such behaviour is barbaric, the evidence obtained is unreliable.
The Judges and the politicians are in disagreement at the moment. This case will need further deliberation in the courts. If the Government can demonstrate that no tainted evidence was involved in his trial in Jordan, then you will get your wish for him to be deported.

But we are happy to keep people here who are willing to restort to terrorism and kill and maim innocent British people.
When the second world war started EVERY German person in the UK was rounded up and put in a prison or other secure camp.
Nowadays we let the terrorists wander the streets and preach their hate. Only now has he been locked up.
What a pathetic country we have become.

I'm not a fan of Abu Qatada, but he has never been charged with any offence involving terrorism or killing or maiming innocent British people. If there was any evidence that he had done so then I am sure the Authorities would have arrested him for that.
The reason we do not round people up because of their faith or colour and intern them is because we are a civilised country who value our hard fought for freedoms.
Far from a pathetic country, we are a model of how a fair and democratic country should behave in the 21st century.
Rounding up people because he don't like them is what Robert Mugabe does, and hopefully we have the strength of our convictions not to go down that tyrannical path.

You misunderstand. The allegation is that torture has already occurred.
Abu Qatada was given asylum to the UK in 1993 on grounds of religious persecution. In 2000 he was tried in his absence in Jordan. His appeal in May was largely won after evidence that at that trial, the evidence against him was extracted by torture and that his conviction in Jordan was therefore unsafe and that the deportation was against the law.
It is not lawful for the British (or any European Government) to deport someone to a regime that uses torture.
