Have I missed something here because I cannot see anything 'sick or insensitive' in Alan Carr's remarks.

Using an ironic slant to shock an audience is the stock-in-trade for a modern comedian, and inevitably, it can be misjudged when a comedian simply let his mouth run away with him.
Ninety-nine percent of the time it comes over as edgy wit, just once in a while, it's a case of "I wish I hadn;t said that ..." and this was one of those.
