Livid with Debenhams

My teenage daughter saw a dress she liked reduced to �33 on the Debenhams website. First thing this morning she went to Debenhams to try it on and buy it. The sales assistant refused to let her try it on and said it was store policy not to let under 18's try clothes on! My daughter came home very upset and embarrassed and cross that she had made a 40 mile round trip for nothing.
My letter of complaint is already typed up.
I just wanted to get this off my chest!

oh my god I have never heard that, how do they expect to get any sales, if security is good then they should allow anyone to try them on. over 18's can be thieves. I remember my mate not being allowed to try clothes on in tesco after 8pm so I held a towell round her on shop floor while she tried bikini on

Seems remarkably like a case of discrimination against younger shoppers. Little wonder, then, that the retail business is suffering from the present economic downtown.

What makes it worse in my eyes is that my daughter is disabled and her disability is a very obvious and apparent one. The poor girl thinks she was not allowed to try the dress on because of this and I've had to spend the last hour consoling her.
I rang the shop and they said they only apply the policy to dresses.

I don't like Debenhams anyway cos they were so rude and condescending when I returned a faulty handbag. I don't shop there anymore.
If they really do have a policy not to allow under 18s to try on clothes then I would have thought that was against the law.
That is so disgusting, and your poor daughter must've felt so humiliated.
They will be losing customers left, right and centre!

My daughter goes to Debs all the time and tries on clothes and she is 14...I would ring immediately!! Dont get angry but state your case and ask when this so called rule came into being and where is this rule displayed in the store. Speak only to the top manager not some assistant and ask for a full explanation. If they are at fault you should ask that they refund your daughters travelling expenses and compensate her in some way....they may even be able to track down the dress and put it to one side. Good luck.

They were very curt on the phone hence the letter. It will be interesting to see what explanation they provide when (and if) they reply.

i bet its not their policy. can you phone head office to check their policy too, so you know exactly where you stand. good idea to write to the local paper, that will give them some little wanted bad publicity.
