Did anybody else watch the programme on Ipswich murders lastnight? It's a very sad story and those girls did not deserve to be killed like that, but I was shouting at the screen when the brother of one came on and started slagging off the public. That we all cared now they were dead, where were we before when these girls were being exploited?' Exploited?? How?? Yes these blokes use them knowing they are in a bad situation and need the money but they got onto the drugs they chose to go onto the streets, even when they knew the killer was about!! Anyone understand how they were exploited??

Did not see the program, but I wonder how much the brother did to help his sister.

But I have to say that some of these girls ARE exploited.

Pimps are usually very nasty people, and will often get vulnerable girls ON to drugs by giving it to them for free.

Once these girls are hooked on drugs the pimp will only supply the drug to feed their habit if the girl earns some money for him.

The pimps will often turn violent if the girl does not do as he wishes, and they soon come to fear the pimp.

In this sense they are exploited, and it is the pity that the members of the public who use these girl for a quick sexual thrill dont realise the pain and heartache that goes on behind the scenes.

Often prostituion, drug dealing and other crimes are all linked with each other.

very good post there. I agree that pimps will expolit them, but some of these girls just went onto the streets that night because they needed drugs knowing that these murders were happening. It just made me angry the brother was trying to blame the public as we should have helped these girls and got them off the streets before all of it happened

yes they are being exploited, but not by the general public.
the women did put themselves into the vulnerable positionof walking the streets, but thats due to their own personal circumstances, again nothing to do with the general public but rather the pimps and the drug dealers.

Those are the ones who should be made to feel guilty, but theres no chance of that is there, so the public is the easier target for the brother. He must feel awful knowing that he couldnt save her.

I think the problem is that the �public at large� is an easy one to throw blame without recourse and that is why he focused on it. If he had said, the police, social services, local council, then perhaps he might have felt a bit exposed when they turned around and said, well hold on there now bucko, it was her decision and we did try to help her etc. If he had blamed the pimps and punters, he would not have got much pity. I suspect many men who use such services, convince themselves that the women are doing it out of choice, and would not even consider any claim of exploitation. So a shout against those would have fell on deafor unsympathetic ears.

Generally I believe there are those women who do it out of choice, and there are lots more who don�t. We have awareness programmes and undercover police operations, and legal reviews, but as for the general public (excluding the punters) I am not sure what we could really do other than try to put men off the idea (never going to happen) or reporting brothels and street walkers when we see them (if the girl seemed old enough, would that really happen? Would the public want to get involved).

So generally, he is probably feeling guilty at his own inaction, and wants to share that burden with the rest of society.

Thanks 4get, you've just reminded me of what I was watching when I fell asleep last night.

It was very sad but interesting up until then, so I'll watch the rest on iplayer....
