A cartoon in the New York Post newspaper has triggered accusations that it is a racist depiction of President Barack Obama.
Commentators denounced the cartoon, while campaigner Rev Al Sharpton vowed to picket the newspaper's headquarters.
Cartoonist Sean Delonas drew police shooting dead a chimp, while remarking "they'll have to find someone else to write the stimulus bill".
The paper has defended the cartoon as a "parody of a current news event".
On Tuesday President Obama signed into law a massive, $787bn (548bn) economic stimulus package.
The plan failed to achieve Republican backing and came after weeks of political wrangling.

Consider yourself amongst the 'stupid' carsonking.
It makes you want to promote infanticide.

I honestly don't think that any national newspaper would be so completely dim as to try and depict the first African American President as a monkey. That kind of thing is normally left to a certain brand of football 'fan', and perhaps daughters of former British Prime Ministers.
If the chimp had been drawn to look like Mr Obama, then perhaps the accusers would have a point.
Just a point on the monkey reference - it has always been used by racist as a term of abuse. When those fans made monkey noises at Sol Campbell, I'm pretty sure they weren't doing it from a sense of affection.
