What is it about this disaster that can still fire the imagination and have people scrabbling for their cheque books?

Because it was full of very rich people and some of them died,Oh and that film and the fact it was a mystery as to where it was, the epithet unsinkable. Oh and the conspiracy theory.

Glamour, glitz ,death
The same could be said of the 'Jack the Ripper Murders' and 'Dr Crippen'.

They would hardly reach the front pages today, but still after around 100 years, they still fire people's imagination.

Oh and they haven't retrieved one body washed up yet. Strange because if you dump a body at sea it eventually washes up somewhere.
It epitimised the post Victorian sticism, the band layed on, added to that there was the desire to "be British" stiff upper lip and all that.

Since the Titanic was on it's way to America, most of the passengers were either American, Irish,or Italian etc immigrants going to settle in America.
The only thing this story highlights is that the credit crunch hasn't hit everyone, unlike the unfortunate Titanic and that iceberg.
