Big brother is watching you!

I had an interesting conversation today when I was out for lunch with some friends. It would seem that the Goverment has plans to compel social networking sites to give them information about you. They say it's to counter terrorism but where will it stop? Apparently they can track what pictures, who's profiles and what website people visit through the networking sites, such as facebook, bebo and myspace. How do you feel about big brother invading your internet life in such a way?

I have nothing to hide so it does not worry me
I'm in the same boat as cazzz

Meh, they know EVERYTHING about you anyway, since from the second you were born. I can't imagine them spying on the sites you look through will tell them any more about you than they already do.

Well cazzz1975 that's the exact answer I gave but I was shot down in flames by my friends. It's the principal of the thing, people being able to access my account without me knowing, it doesn't matter that I have nothing to hide, I find that rather scary!
but unless you are up to no good they will have no interest in your details, I can go on facebook and look at thousands of profiles that are not private but I have no reason or interest.

Everything I post is fictional, so why should I care.

Interesting link hc4361. I was given this link

http://tech.blorge.com/Structure:%20/2009/01/0 9/new-uk-email-law-allowing-the-government-to- spy-on-us-all/

After reading it, it would seem they could access my emails as well. That means if they wanted to they could access my bebo private messages without me knowing. Now that can't be right.
well if it prevents another world trade center/ 7/7 then Im all for it, whatever I have in my email will not interest them, like I say I have nothing to hide
Question Author
I feel the same way as you cazzz1975, but it's the invasion of my privacy I object to and it could be without me even knowing, it's for this same reason I object to id cards.
I dont, personally its a small price to pay to prevent bomb attacks, illegal immigrants, drug trafficking, child abuse ect..

Question Author
yeah, because they are doing such a sterling job with all of those areas just now aren't they!

My whole point is the privacy part, I've got nothing to be ashamed of or to hide, but I don't want the police or the goverment peering through my window everyday, do you?
you know maizy they probably dont, can you imagine the man hours involved in just snooping through every persons email for no reason? they will do it if they are investigating a person for crimes, not just a sunday afternoon chuckiling at peoples email.

the government are quite welcome to go through my mail or look in my window, I have nothing to hide from them. please bear in mind that they cannot go through billions of emails, they would not be able to have time to work let alone enough staff to do there normal duties.

I would imagine they would access the email of the people they are tipped off about, like all those guys who had joined that paedophile group, they tracked them via their bank account details, would you prefer that they were not caught?

if you have nothing to worry about then I wouldnt worry, they are not interested in being nosey they are trying to cut serious crime

Question Author
I do agree with what you are saying and yes I am glad a paedophile ring was busted but it still doesn't warrant the goverment or anybody else having access to my email/bebo page without me knowing! All it would take is for someone to have the same name as me or me to access a page they think I shouldn't be looking at and don't let them kid you they have easy access to millions of users accounts. Whilst I understand the reasons and sentiments behind it, it's not, in my opinion right.
Question Author
also, I've known about mobile phone tracking for a while but this is just big brother at his worst!!
Maizy, you sound suspicious to me. I'm not surprised the police are interested. I would keep people like you under constant surveillance.
well we can agree to differ, personally I dont feel like my privacy is invaded, I still do what I normally do without any bother. my email is pretty boring :D

it wont change my life, but I will feel a bit safer that the undesirables may be unable to get away with what they have been getting away with without anyone knowing!
Do you really think they are not doing it already????

They've been doing it for years.....!!!
It's like eveything; once you get a debit card or credit card they know exactly where you've been and what you've bought. Even now buying groceries with your supermarket card lets them know what you put into your shopping trolley every week. Regarding ID cards they're a useful (and free here in France) way to travel around Europe without having to pay for a passport . It is not used to register my whereabouts. Big brother's been around for ages.
