had to increase my thyroxine 6 weeks ago from 175 to 200, had blood test yesterday, my doctor rang me tonight to say had to increase dose further so now on 225 for 6 weeks then another blood test, she said i may have to go up further and if this doesnt control it i will be refered to an endocrinologist as i may not be absorbing the thyroxine, what stops you absorbing it and what does the endocrinologist do if your not? Any advise you can give me would be great, thanks in advance.
Important....find out first what your TSH level is.
Believe ot or not Drs sometimes get it wrong. i.e you should have reduced the dose, not increased it. This may not be your case, but I have seen it happen time and time again.
I cannot think of any condition where thyroxine is not absorbed.
There are various reasons .If you suffer from celiac or crohns disease you may have trouble absorbing the thyroxine .If you are on the pill ,HRT or are taking some sort of other drug this may effect you absorbing it .I wouldn't worry too much dinkydoo.I have hypothyroidism. It took ages to get my levels right .The endocrinologist specialises in managing thyroid disease and will rule in or out the reasons why you are like this .
If I were you, I would ask to see the endocrinologist anyway.
They are the specialists after all. I was referred to the endocrinologist for the same reason as you, to see if I was absorbing thyroxine properly. I had a blood test to see what my T3 and T4 were aswell.
