With no MPs in Scotland, the Tories are desperate to woo Scottish voters at the next General Election.

Is this really the best way to go about it?

How can this be racist?
He called him a "Scuffer" (I didn't know what it meant either) and used "Scottish" as an adjective.
I thought we were all British so how can the Scots be classed as a race.
If anything he's guilty of being a pompous git.
Does my head in all this nonsense.
I'd have said "scuffer" was a term for police, but I'd have attributed it to the south not the north (in Dickensian times for that matter too), I don't believe the M.P's version of events for one minute.
An arrogant Tory, what's the world coming to?
Scotland is a nation so they are a race just as much as the English or Asian.
If he'd have just said "scuffer" the argument would be who is this idiot? No more than that.
But, he used the term Scottish before it clearly as a derogatory term, and that's wrong.
Again if he called him a ginger or some such he'd just be viewed as commonal garden idiot.
This is no way for an honourable member to behave, an M.P would be the first berate you or I for behaving in the same manner, especially at a football match.

Everton using your theory "Asian" can't be a race as many countries cultures and ethnicity make up Asia.
People need to stop overeacting.
I was "racially" abused at a wedding in Wales ("Go home you English c**t") I didn't go running to the police(heddlu) I just laughed at the idiot.
Asians are a race of many nations.
For instance many Malaysians hate the Chinese even though they're both Malaysian.
I agree entirely with your reaction at the wedding, indeed whenever I hear racist epiphets I just think what an idiot.
But if you refused to be dealt eith by a copper of any race or nationality, you'd get short sharp shrift.
An M.P should'nt behave in such a manner, I think if colour had been involved he'd have been arrested.
Both Asian, whoopsies.
I think the policeman needs to develop a thicker skin in his chosen profession and the MP needs to take more water with it. I think talking in terms of a racist affront is stretching matters somewhat.

mighty:

What if the MP had been Gordon Brown and he'd referred to a PC as an "English c**t", would it then have been appropriate for the PC to have laughed it off?

Julnar:

Had the PC been Asian instead and he's been called a "****", what kind of response would that have brought about?
-- answer removed --
Scuffers is a slang term for the Police.
Parafin he called the copper a Scottish scuffer and he had to look up what it meant!
It's all a bit petty really.
Using an example of Gordon Brown saying that is irrelevant,as is the Asian analogy.
People need to lighten up,you can call me an English scuffer if you want it really doesn't bother me :-)
More chips than Aunt Bessies.
Jeeeez.

Sorry, mighty, you've just answered that like an MP would.
For heavens sake!

The MP was out of order and should be a little more polite in his dealings with the constabulary.

But the idea that a long-serving police officer has to run to his superiors because he has allegedly been called a Scottish (correct) scuffer (possibly mildly derogatory, depending on your interpretation) beggars belief. Senior police officers (and indeed junior ones such as PC McQuarrie) have better things to do with their time (paid for by the taxpayer) than investigate non-events such as this.

The PC needs to be a little more robust.
If,as you say,Scottish is a race, Is Andy Murray Scottish or British? Depends if he wins or not.!!

N.J.:

Were your type of attitude reflected throughout our society as a whole nowadays then you would have an excellent point.

Unfortunately, though, as long as people are for example let leave to sue for trivialities such as "repetitive strain injury", "unfair dismissal", "sexual discrimination" etc, this type of thing will continue unabated.

Hurt feelings = lawsuits.

In 2001, the Court of Session ruled in a case involving the BBC that the English do have separate "national origins" to the Scots and as a consequence, the Race Relations Act 1976 does apply to discrimination between the Scots and English.
So just what discrimination did the ultra-delicate PC McQuarrie suffer, TCL?

And how, paraffin does he quantify his vast losses when his lawsuit is heard and, presumably, found in his favour?

It is about time the people of this nation (and in particular police officers) grew up and got on with their lives instead of bleating about such trivia.
They should both be suspended, the copper for being such a wuss and the MP for being an arogant tw@t

Don't shoot the messenger. I only said how it is. I'm not condoning his conduct.

However, am still waiting for someone to actually address my original question.
