Robinruth (or anyone else): by putting 'letters' in quotes are you suggesting that the highlighted 'when' is not in fact letters (and therefore is numbers, there not being anything else in the grid to highlight)?

The instructions in the preamble just state that a 'what' & a 'when' must be highlighted.

Indeed Kayakamina, I was probably just miffed that it took me so long to see the 'when'. I am delighted that ZitaGreen has her Chambers! How could any of us live without our bedtime reading?

RR & K: yes, it hit me as I was driving home. A good example of the need to, um, "think outside the box" when working a cryptic.

Thanks everyone, glad you all found this one OK. The Spectator does tend to use this gimmick from time to time (1805 and 1815 seem to stick in my memory, though I may be wrong) so I suppose we should be on the alert for at least another year and a half !

Thanks to a very kind person, I now have my Chambers ( yes, I know I told you already) and have made great progress. Have all but 7 lights and I'm getting them next. I did think 'outside the box' but was not at all sure I was on the right train of thought. Thanks, again Cruciverbalist.

I'm glad your 'red' book is proving so useful & so soon.

The other 'red book' I mentioned to you would been even more useful ,as all bar one
of the EPs are on page 494.

Christmas is not too far away!

That's page 550 in the latest (Sept 2009) edition of the red book in question!

And, with regard to that other 'Red Book in Question', I don't know how I ever managed wthout it. It travels with me now, and was a tentative footstep onto the doorstep of the Listener crosswords. Even the little pocket version is better than nothing.

Ah, and just out of interest - it was page 527 in the 2008 edition. That might (yes, I realize that 'might' is the word) indicate how fast she is adding relevant words.
