30 years ago Jim Callaghan's government drowned in a sea of rubbish as strikes left the bins unemptied and the dead unburied. People were saying it's time for a change.

With Gordon's government so deeply unpopular, I can't see any way back for Labour in the 6 months until an election has to be called - irrespective of what happens regarding the groups of workers currently in dispute with their employers. As I recall, Callaghan 'went to the people' some time before the five years were up.
I don't think this will happen this time around. It will dribble on until May, when the inevitable change of party in government will occur.
Not really, the union problems these days are 1/100th of what they where then, mainly due to the activities of our greatest peace time leader, notice how Labour have not repealed any of the anti union legislation.

I think though there is a similarity between the the people wanting a "change".
I agree with Geezer.

There have been isolated strikes this autumn, but nothing on the scale of 1978/79.

During recessions, workers are worried about keeping their jobs and are less likely to go on stike. The bin strikje in Leeds is about regrading, and the management trying to cut wages by a third. The Royal Mail strike has been simmering for years, that is due to poor management, and dinosaur Unions. British Airways strike is about 1700 job loses and pay cuts mainly due to a downturn in passengers due to the recession.
"I agree with Geezer" - Gromit, my gast is flabbered!
It is a fact that the 'best' policies are always put forward by the opposition!
But yes, there seems to be a wish for change.
