Is it right that after something like a hundred years of suffrage, and somewhat less of universal suffrage, that in the twenty first century the media should seek to rate (presumably) inteligent women on their fitness to look at, rather than their fitness to govern?

A link would have been useful but, it is not just women or politicians.

In this age of media image and presentation, that is all that seems to matter.

It is annoying and too Sunnish. On the other hand, I rather wish more of Blair's babes had indeed proved fit to govern... but you could say the same about a lot of the males.

That's exactly the point JNO, nobody ever says "he's a useless orator, a worthless but he's got a nice arse and good taste in shoes."
Look at Ann Widdecombe, I don't agree with much of what she stands for but at least she stands for something, she wouldn't get a look in now.
