Straight couple seek civil partnership

A straight couple have sought a civil partnership in Islington and have been refused on the grounds that they're just for same-sex couples. They've said they're going to challenge it.

Must say, I'm with them all the way. I think a great solution to the whole 'gay marriage' and equality question is simply just to do what's been done elsewhere and allow heterosexual couples the option of civil partnerships, too.

What do you guys think? I'm genuinely quite interested.

I think the problem is that word 'marriage' (which I hope I've spelled correctly this time).

Christians would be up in arms if this word was used to decribe the status of same sex unions...which is weird, because the ceremony could (or rather WOULD) take place outside a religious setting - say in a registry office.

The minute the 'M' word is mentioned, feathered get ruffled.

Does that mean that in your eyes I am not 'married' awfypanloafy? I married in a register office because I am not religious, but am 'married' in the eyes of the law. I believe that gays should be able to get 'married' the same as everybody else.

But don't you think it's a good idea that Civil Partnerships came about so that gay couples can enjoy the same legal and financial benifits that married couples enjoy?

Before CPs came about, a gay couple who'd been together for 30 years would be liable for inheritance tax should one of them die.

Civil partners now enjoy pension rights that married couples do.

Each party of the union will become a parental figure and thus become responsible for any children either person may have

Treatment of those in Civil Partnerships is now comparable to that of a civil marriage in regards to life assurance.

Those in Civil Partnerships now enjoy hospital visiting rights as next of kin.

There are loads of other reasons why CPs could be considered a good thing. Do you really see their introduction as bad???

marriage in a registry office is a civil partnership, if they must be different why not keep their own names.
