Missed yesterdays paper so couldn't check these. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

39A MAKE HAPPY (Cryptic: pay up to make one happy) 7 letters I had DELIGHT
40D SCARLET (Cryptic: Scarlet woman you once dated. 5 letters I have ??a?e

If correct the 'H' from delight would start the clue for scarlet hence it would be H?A?E. Only two possibilities I came up with were heave or hoare but first is irrelevant and internet dictionaries fail to find a good definition of the latter particularly in relation to the clue so if anyone can solve these I'd be grateful.
