Yes - People may argue over things in general, but what religion does is give a huge group of people across many countries a unequivical and unethical stand point i.e I am Muslim i stand with my brothers, Irrespective of the rights and wrongs of the situation.
How many times do you hear a religious person claim persecution becuse of the thier religion? When this happens people of the same religion then side with them. This was a huge part of the protection of the I.R.A in Ireland as it was seen as a religious divide.
Keyplus seems to need rules and cannot think for himself. His rules are the be all and end all of his thinking and it genuinly seems to puzzle him that people can think for themselves.

Those that want to create some sort of "order" to wield power would do so anyway (cf Mao, Pol Pot, Stalin - I may be wrong, but I don't think any of those used religion as a basis for their actions). Similarly, those that want to feel persecuted will find others with a common cause ("travellers", fox hunters etc).
On the other hand religion does give a great deal of comfort to many, and the basic tenet of most religions is "be good to one another".
I am an atheist, by the way. (But not a "Richard Dawkins" type - I feel that his particular brand of proselytizing Atheism is pretty much another type of religion).

No. There are studies showing religious people are happier people. Why would I want to make people less happy in the hope (unfounded, imo) that lack of religion will somehow stop wars?

yes relgious people are very happy because they have found a way that they are allowed to do bad things in the name of god/allah/buddh/pinochio etc etc and therefore are doing the work of said diety and as such are in fact good.
good people do good things, bad people do bad things, it takes religion to make good people do bad things

They can stay religious
All I want is
A) No more bishops and religious leaders in the house of Lords
B) No more public money going to religious schools
C) Abolition of compusory acts of worship in state funded schools (they can continue to teach comparative religion as an optional subject)
Is that really so much to ask for?
