BBC 'Horizon' - Dogs - (silver foxes)
2 Answers
Did anyone see this fascinating programme about the origins of the domestic dog?
It dealt mainly with the reasons why humankind and dogs have such a close relationship and how this came about.
Part of the research into how this came about took them to a silver fox breeding farm in Siberia.
They had been breeding the foxes since the 1950s and included selecting out for further breeding the more 'docile' offspring of the foxes as part of their experiments. This was repeated and in time the net result included tame foxes with other dog-like characteristics.
Aside from the 'scientific' interest, it got me thinking "I WANT ONE!!"
There was no mention of the screaming question AFAIC "are these beasties now on the market as pets?"
So I went off and did some research -yes you can buy them -in the USA at least- for nearly $6,000 !!! ..YIKES !
Anyone know anything different?
