For anyone other than Mail readers.A.N. Wilson is an idiot.

What I don't understand is that it was okay for the British Empire to spread over a quarter of the Earth, changing other countries whether you think in a beneficial way or not. The British influenced the world by stamping its own brand of Religion - Christianity and Civilization on its Colonies. We know that the British considered themselves racially superior to its subjects, to name afew - the Jamacians, Indians, Pakistanis, Afghans, Aussies, Kenyians etc and treated people as inferior and uncivilized. And yet the British moan and moan about immigrants coming to this country!!! And suddenly they are nostalgic about their past? A past in which they forced their way of life onto others, looted them for their own greed and commercialism. Am I missing something here?
Successive British Governments failed this Country, not Immigrants.

No AOG the Britain when you were a lad does not exist
Guess what?
In 20 years time the Britain of today will not either - it's called change get used to it
Any idiot can write a book by picking out things that have changed or supposedly changed for the worse and ignoring the changes for the better.
People have a higher standard of living now
Today more people have access to higher education than before
Road safety is vastly improved as is health care resulting in longer life expectancy.
Better housing, faster transport cheap air flight - remember what happened when Freddie laker tried it?
Prosecutions can now challenge sentences. Double jeoprady cases can be brought - what happened to the "costa del crime" with criminals thumbing their poses at the police from their villas in Spain?
Which chapters of Wilson's book do you suppose cover all these things.
This is clearly a silly book for sad people who think the world was better when they were young.

Ruddy good job too.The 'England' I live in now is a lot better in every way than at any time in my 63 years.
Ah wait a minute.Back then, at varous times, we had hanging, national service, food and clothing rationing, no foreign holidays, few had refrigerators or TVs , there was much lower standard of living, the unions had public voting on wildcat strikes, a 3 day week, fewer people owned their own homes, the pill didn't exist, no X-factor.........Could be wrong.!
AOG loves the old days. The memory plays tricks. What could he be complaining about?
