I think Oneeyedvic has it spot on.
it's not about punishing him for cheating on his wife and being a poor role model. It's about whether his teammates will respect him after letting down another member of the squad.
And if Capello thinks they no longer do, he should replace him. If it had been some random stripper, things might be different.

The argument here is that by cheating on his wife with a woman who used to be the girlfriend of one of his team-mates (though not actually at the time of the alleged incident) he has lost the respect of the rest of the team and is, therefore, unfit to retain the captaincy...
