It was well within my catchment area in London .'Everybody' ,well nearly everybody, on that estate had the same name for the lead man involved, and many had direct evidence but there was cat in hell's chance of anyone coming forward to testify. It was that kind of place. There was a group loyalty, a distrust or hatred of the police (who regularly invented admissions in those days, a practice we called 'verballing', among other far worse practices) and, least of all, the thought that you'd be shunned and yourself the victim of violence if you spoke out.
I lived there when this happened, fortunately I was away on holiday, we could not let our children play out anymore i was just awful, even the police knew who was responsible, we managed to move away soon after and have neve been back.
