Airport Expansion

Heathrow expansion has almost reached saturation point. Gatwick and Stansted have room for expansion but are sited near to large populations. Assuming air travel will increase where is the best siting for a new airport that will cause the least disturbance?

When Hong Kong airport became too small for all the air traffic, they demolished an Island,moved millions of tons and joined two islands to make the new airport.They built new bridges,tunnels, roads and railways to take passengers and freight 35 kilometres from the city to the new airport.This was completed in eight years.
we've spent longer than that talking about it. Best place for it ? off the coast and get the Hong kong engineers to build it.

Shortly British Airways will cease to be British when it merges with Iberia the Spanish National Airline.

When the two Airlines combines, there will duplication in many areas and tens of thousands of jobs will go.

This is more easily achieved with a broken Union.

To date BA has done nothing to avert the strike, and seems happy to absorb the short term losses the strike will inevitably bring. because, in the long term, they will save more money by getting rid of staff more cheaply with a weakened Unite.

The Iberia board met on Thursday and the final approval for the merger was expected to be announced. Since then, silence. Maybe the know an announcement now would give the game away.

Lydd airport here in Kent is to be expanded (name to be London Ashford I hear although not very near to either!) and we already have an exceptionally long but not much used runway at ex-RAF Manston in Thanet. Manston is beginning to be used more but could do so much more - and it has good road and high speed rail links into London.. why not?

is London Ashford nearer to Charing Cross than London Southend? Waving silly names like that around makes it easy for Ryanair to claim they're flying you to London when they're not.

It beats me why Brown and co are still pushing for the expansion of Heathrow when even the judge says it takes no note of congestion and pollution. Vulcan we have seen the demise of British governments that seem to steer away from projects like these that would benefit future generations. You suspect they are only worried about how they will be elected next time. I suppose the only real solution is to build it off the coast to stop the nimbys complaining.
If we are to build on land Manston has been suggested before and would make an ideal candidate.

Share it out between Liverpool, Manchester and Birmingham. Why does everything need to be in the South ?

If Heathrow is primarily used as a hub it doesn't matter where you sight it. Those passengers step off one plane only to board another.
