Does Cameron really think that this is going to work?

Voluntary Civilian National Service, for two months??????

Youngsters looking after the elderly?????

/// 'It's going to mix young people from different backgrounds, different ethnicities and religions, ///

Yes it will interest some (the type who would join the Scouts) but can anyone envisage those that hang around the streets of sink estates being interested?

It is these that need to be targeted, and to do this it has got to be compulsory, over a longer period and residential, away from their existing environment.

So we do people out of jobs for what. How long before it becomes no "volunteer" no dole?

Typical right wing policy - nothing gained everything lost.
I'd have thought the Yoof of today would jump at the chance, government assistance in mugging and abusing old people, no many nations offer that! Bad Move Dave!
Dave - so I presume that you think it is far better to have kids sitting around doing nothing than volunteering?

R1 - yes, bcause that is what kids do all day long - mug old people.

It amazes me that people complain about the youth of today, but when schemes come up to help and engage with them, no one wants to get involved.

It's not the youth of today that's destroying this country, but the apathy of the older generation who can't be bothered to engage with them.
There are a lot of young people that can be and have been engaged. However outside of that we are left with a hardcore of feral lowlife scum bred by a previous generation of the same and no amount of left wing wishy washy cobblers will help that.
R1Geezer you make it sound like there're young people who engage OR feral low-life scum, that's a pretty black-and-white view
National service is, of course, a ridiculous idea.

But, even though it's totally impractical and outdated and unenforceable, the words appeal to a certain demographic.

So Cameron is playing to them, knowing full well that, as an idea, it's flimsy at best.
Vic - No I don't think its good for them to be sitting around doing nothing, I think that any scheme to help them should involve paid work.

If you use "volunters" to do unpaid work you are doing someone out of a job, then it becomes compulsory and benifit linked.

The kids become labourours and end up on the same scrap pile, meanwhile the people who's jobs they are doing become part of a pool of unemployed cheap labour.

Which, if you know your history, is what every right wing government wants and trys to get.

There weren't 3m unemplyed in Thatchers Britain by luck you know
The 3m under the early reign of MrsT where not real jobs, they happenned once employers where once again allowed to lay people off which was made almost impossible under the hard line socialists.
If you use "volunters" to do unpaid work you are doing someone out of a job, then it becomes compulsory and benifit linked.

And what a great idea. Benefits are there to help people who are looking for work or have had misfortune. I live in an area which is in the bottom 3% of the country for deprivation. There are plenty of people who are second (or even third) generation unemployed.

It is very easy to get benefits if you have to do nothing. A constant cry is that there is no point in getting a job as it won't pay enough to cover my benefits.

If people had to do something (eg litter picking, gardening, painting etc) in order to get benefits, firstly there would be job creation (by employing trainers, supervisors etc) and secondly I don;t think that you could go to any town or city and say that if you had an army of volunteers to help out in the community, that you would be putting people out of work.

Walk down the street tonight and see how much litter there is. Look at the local amenities and see if they could do with a lick of paint. By getting people to do this, you are not putting people out of work!
And that is why right and left never meet.
Vic you are correct here. No benefits should go to the able bodied unnemployed without them doing something for it.
Well in your black and white world it seems that the 'right' think you should be responsible for your actions and the 'left' think that the world owes you a living.

Do you really have an issue with people carrying out community work then? Do you think criminals should stop community service in case it puts people out of a job?
you talkingto me vic? I was agreeing.

Sorry R1 - was talking to Davethedog
what about if i didn't have a job, but i intend to carry on as an instructor at cadets, which involves a lot of charity work and hard work, would someone like me still have to do it?
No, Mollykins, I'd hope that credit would be given for voluntary work already done. However the sorts of people this is aimed at would be unlikely to be already doing anything useful.
and i think sea cadet volunteering would be more useful and enjoyable for me.
I wouldn't want some of the youngsters from around my way looking after me, theyd steel the shoelaces out of your shoes them lot. I believe that at the age of 16 all youngsters should spend a year in the forces, that should teach them a bit about life.
As mentioned today ferile youths need to be taken out of their comfort zone. To sit at home collecting their dole money is the cause of most of the youth problems today. Get them off their backsides and do something useful.
