Isn't it rather irresponsible to have a child as a single parent when you are are in the armed forces and could therefore be sent to the front line and killed. It is bad enough when there is a partner at home looking after the kids while dad or mum go to war. Or am I going to offend the thought police with comments like that?

I heard on the news she was NOT a single mother when joining the army, but then became pregnant.

But I agree that these people ALWAYS seem to play the race card.

They expect US not to be racist, but as soon as anything goes wrong they say it is because of their race.

In future lets not hire any women of child bearing age - just in case they get pregnant. Ridiculous idea isn't it but I fear that a lack of common sense and realistic attitude by both women and employers will lead this to being the norm

Rather than being a case of wanting to have her cake and eat it, I'd suggest it's a
case of her wanting to have her cake, and defend this country so we can continue to log onto AB and criticise from the comfort of our armchairs.

Not sure how racial discrimination comes into it though. That's quite odd.

Both my missus and I were in the Army, not that many years ago, and when we got married, she left the service. Also, had a serving female soldier become pregnant, she would also have been discharged.

Nowadays, it's like a kindergarten where everything has turned full circle to the extent that instead of individuals serving their country, it's the exact opposite. The Army isn't some cosy, 9-5, Monday-Friday, every weekend plus bank holidays off, type of job, it's meant to be vocational where you serve the needs of your nation.

The likes of Churchill must be spinning in his grave: can you imagine if he'd been confronted with such stupidity during WWII? We'd all be speaking German.

There are so many cases of constructive dismissal, racist/sexist/homophobic bullying and abuse of staff coming out of the army, you have to wonder about the meatheaded mentalities of the people in charge.

We're told that they're highly trained and disciplined men and women but they struggle to obey regulations that the rest of us cope with comfortably. Do they pick and choose?

Say what you like about the toughness or otherwise of the people on the receiving end of it, but if tactically aware officers are unable to follow incredibly simple anti-discrimination rules and rudimentary employment law, they shouldn't be entrusted with leading military campaigns.

No wonder we've not won in Afghanistan. It's scary.

the country has an interest in having a trained army. It also has an interest in not letting children grow up unparented. So there are laws. Apparently the military thought its interests came ahead of the law. They were wrong.

The country also has an interest in having its military obey the law.

Some have blamed the Government, some the MOD, but I think in this case it is the judges fault for coming to such a decision, he should have thrown her case out of court.

We are becoming more and more accustomed to some of these judges making mad-cap rulings, isn't the time overdue, when Judges should be elected into office?
