Getting a suit made to measure.

You older guys will no doubt remember the days of John Collier, Hepworths etc. in the high street, where one could get a wool suit made to measure (bespoke) for about £15, there was even one tailor called the 50 Shilling tailor (£2.50).

Well according to this news article there could be a re-birth of the high street tailor, because Moss Brother are to make one a suit for between £250 to £350.

All of which has got Savile Row a little worried, I think so a Savile Row suit costs £3000 plus.

When I used to go into Burtons in the 50's to get measured it was better to go in with your body all twisted,that way you got a perfect fit.!!

I don't think the people in Saville Row will be unduly worried about 'cheap suits' from China.
I remember Burton's suits. First one I got cost a tenner.

When I was 16 I worked as a junior cashier at Burtons..........every Saturday you'd get the drunks coming in and asking if the young lady could measure their inside leg.....

I worked in the sub accounts department at Hepworths in the late 50's, when I'd just left school. Men could buy their suits on tick in those days. I ended up working on their computer for 11years, until I left to have my family. Nice place to work for.
Hepworths made the touring clothing for Yorkshire and England cricketers. It was a good place to work for. It was China and the far east that killed the clothing industry with its ready made cheap clothing.

Made to measure and bespoke aren't the same thing at all, made to measure just scales a standard pattern to your measurements. Bespoke means having the pattern made up to your measurements and body shape and requires several fittings in which modifications may be made to ensure a perfect fit.

If you are a standard size there is no need to be measured up. In fact 10% of measurements taken by tailors are wrong especially if you lose or put on weight in the meantime. Also it was custom to have a fitting to eradicate faults which would be difficult and time consuming all the way from China.

Marks and Spencer and probably others now sell the trousers separately the only problem being the matching up of the cloth as it will come from separate rolls.

My mate's sister ordered an online wedding dress from China!
As a matter of fact, it was pretty good. She was pleased with it for the money she spent. Delivered on time, too, which is more than one can say with some companies over here.
