Am I losing the Plot???

Have I gone mad or is it just the way this country is going?

Right our good old 'friends' the government has proposed plans to build loads and loads of 'affordable' houses in and around the UK, did they ever think about these things.

1. Countryside will not exist anymore cause any land they find they will build on it.

2. Packing us in like sardines in a small country is not the answer.

3. Building houses is great but what about providing more Schools, Hospitals and other public needed things???

4. More and more companies in this country are closing down due to things being done cheaper abroad hence finding a job here is going to be harder.

5. policing, fire services, paramedics will have to be increased.

What is going on? what happen to the good days? Why are we letting them do this?

If you look in any local newspaper you will find brand new housing developments.this has been going on since the year dot.But you will find these houses are outside the reach of many people.So why not build affordable houses for those on a lower income.its a myth that you can go and build anywhere in the countryside,there are strict planning controls in force.we also have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the world.The good old days?did they realy exist!!

OK I get your point but what about providing more facilties like schools, hospitals, more policing and other services.  As for the countryside why is it that near where I live the countryside has all but gone?

It could be your local countryside was in fact ex farmland not natural  countryside,but correct me if i am wrong.all our local hospitals have had millions spent on them making them much bigger.my local primary school is having new classrooms and offices built at the begining of next month.all the land around where i live is owned by the national trust and can never be built on.But there are new developments on old farmland and land that has gone to waste for years and not a pretty site,with people dumping rubbish etc.But i do agree with you that there is never enough police patroling the streets.And this has been going on for years.

Fear not,John Prescott in in charge of all this,remember his Regional assembly plans, 10 year integrated transport policy and his postal voting debacle in the local council elections,still waiting for my ballot paper,wish I could make em wait as long for my taxes!!!

2. well if you move there will be one less. what exactly is your miracle solution for a rising population and limited space?

3. what about providing houses for people to live in? you;re right, not important to you cos you have a house. not selfish at all. Given that the govt has been pumping money into the black holes you mention the investment in housing is small by comparison.

4.so . . . people will never get a job and we should tell them to leave the country. British citizens out, I hear ya!

5. In line with our expanding population - there's a crazy idea. Paid for with the increased tax revenue - how stupid.

 

What are you on about? There were no good old days - we are letting them do this because the vast majority of people who have bought a house recently are heading for financial meltdown if the housing market turns, or simply cannot afford to get a place of their own. It gets my vote.

My only reservation about providing 'affordable' housing, is will that housing always remain 'affordable'? If it doesn't, then I don't see how it helps in the long term.  E.g. if the average one bed flat in a particular area is �100k but an 'affordable' version is �60k, on a re-sale will the �60k version be valued in line with the �100k flat?

misszippy -affordable housing is normally covenanted so that it either sells at 60% of the current market value, or can only be sold to people fulfilling certain criteria like first time buyers etc. Either way there is a legal agreement that it wont revert to full market sale.

1. Hooray!  I am anti-countryside.

2. There is still plenty of space.

3. There are those as well, but first you need houses for the people.

4. As long as there is free flow of labour in a free market, it will even out in the end.  The problem starts when one puts artificial restrictions on numbers.

Surely the houses will only be build if there is a need.  No one will be building all these houses for them to remain empty.  As long as people keep buying houses will be built.  Not building new houses will increase the demand and therefore the price of the existing stock.

i agree with pickle. Im sure that the government arent going to build thouseands of house for them to be left unused.

Im also guessing that bad11thebone isnt in the same situation as me. in my current financial situation ( that being the only debt i have is for my car ) i wouldnt even be able to dream about moving into my own house with my boyfriend with the prices how they are at the moment until we are both about 30 and im 20 now.

Why shouldnt the government build affordable houses for people in this situation

GB is a big country and im sure there is still room for expansion!

yes, you are completely mad. you are still in the uk and things are only going to get much worse under your current government. what you dont see is that when they do build all these new houses, house prices in general will fall. when this happens how many more people will be in negative equity and they will not be able to sell the property. this is one of my many reasons that i have never voted for a labour government, as they are stuck in the 1900's and they can only make things much worse. consider this, you want all the new housing and police and nurses and schools etc etc, BUT who will pay for this? YOU? you see your government has to borrow large sums of money to keep the country going and this financial year, things are looking VERY bad for the UK plc. this is one of my reasons to sell up in the UK and move to sunny Spain. its the best thing i ever did. TRY IT
