How come the deaths of 300 people in a stampede in India did not make it to any news channel yesterday except on ceefax.

actually it was reported on Sky news for most of the late afternoon and was on their News text interactive pages for longer still.

I know it doesn't make it any less tragic, but I seem to recall that deaths due to stampedes and over crowding have marred similar religious pilgrimmages or ceremonies in recent years in the region.  I think sheer weight of numbers causes problems.

The incident was mentioned as 'breaking news' on BBC One's News at One testerday and it was dealt with at greater length on Channel Four's 7pm news and/or BBC's News at Ten. (I can't remember which, but it was certainly on one or t'other...or even both.) It appears you are mistaken in believing it to have been largely ignored.
