"Tralafgar Square roundabout being circled by 40 motorbikes. Their flag says "Riders Against Tory Stealth Taxes."

I think a lot of Tories are feeling like they've been betrayed.

Spare Ed
today's charity cases are tomorrow's customers.

not at all ed, I think the budget is what we needed, just a little curious as to why overseas aid seems to be so important, I mean I could understand it from Noo Labour but the Tories??
If only that was true jno . So many remain charity cases for ever and those that don't go round the corner where they can buy something cheaper. That's why some aid is in the form of goods because if its money the recipients spend it on Chinese products.
This is understandable but Aid does not automatically lead to UK Trade. It doesn't even generate much goodwill. In the UN agencies the undeveloped nations of the world almost invariability vote against us.
Question Author
Most "aid" leads to Chief Mumbo Jumbo getting his 17th Rolls Royce, what load of old pony you talk jno.
nothing's ever automatic. You're taking a punt. You're also trying to help those who need it. Most countries are a lot further up the creek than we are, despite Geezer's belief that we are all doomed.
If we'd been putting foreign aid into schools in Afghanistan 20 years ago we wouldn't be putting troops in there now
Question Author
so our aid would have turnmed them into a fluffy bunny ally then wold it jake? So because we didn't stump up they invited in the Taliban and became a bunch of loonies, Silly me it was all our fault! right oh!

your take naivety to a new level, from a science to an artform
That's right Baz - don't even try to argue the point you'll only show yourself up.

Come on Geezer - what was it the Jesuits say "Give me a boy till he's 7 and I'll give you the man"

Putting aside what gets taught in Madarassas in some of these places

You're some local tribesman and someone comes preeching the evils of the west

your child is being taught to read and write in a school provided by a western charity

Your father's cataracts were treated by a flying hospital

Water pumps for you village came from Western red cross workers

This is not naivity it's simple common sense and History

Look at what happened to Germany after the Treaty of Versaille

Now look what happened after WWII

The difference is that huge amounts of reconstruction money was pumped in with the Marshall plan
jake the UN agencies have been pouring aid into Afghanistan since 1988 .
You do talk a load of tosh.
Really modeller - you're suggesting that the principla is flawed and that the effects of the Marshall plan were imaginary

Or is there something magical about Afghanistan? like they're all dumb heathans in your mind?

Any facts and figures you have might be a welcome change as well
No?

Well I'll give you some facts and figures then and we'll see who's talking Tosh

The aid you're talking about was called operation Salam and amounted to $650 Million or about $20 per head of population

yeah flooding the place with cash

That is roughly the same as the money that went to Germany in 1949 - Without adjusting for 45 years of inflation.

Next time you want to accuse me of talking tosh - I suggest you do your homework first!
It was not the Marshal Plan that resurrected Germany it was the ability and leadership of the Germans to rebuild their nation . It is that lack of leadership and a benefit mentality that is holding back these underdeveloped nations.
You can pump in as much aid as you like but without that will to change nothing ever will.
There's a good article in the Telegraph.co.uk under comment - personal view by Alec Van Gelder people should look at.

It's a discussion about the current 0.7% GDP spent on foreign aid and whether that figure should be closer to 0.05%. The worrying thing is if a Bill is passed making the 0.7% a legal requirement.

Another article in telegraph also states that there is plenty of evidence suggesting that aid does not work and actually causes poverty.

Is it the actual aid though or the none accountability of it?

Aid goes towards building the economic infrastructure, houses, schools, improved utilities, buy's medical supplies and treatment, food and to prevent immigration etc.

The unaccountable side is the corruption of public officials who personally enrichment themselves, it is the diversion of aid to military and nuclear supplies.
# f we'd been putting foreign aid into schools in Afghanistan 20 years ago we wouldn't be putting troops in there now #
Between 1990 and 2000 7000 schools were built with aid money.

you are nothing but a simplistic leftie apologist, and as previous experience has shown people like you arent worth the trouble or time to argue with.

people like you love nothing better than to make a simple matter complicated.

fact : the UK is in severe debt, so giving money away to other countries is totally illogical, not to mention stupid and a total waste, when it could be put to far better use here in the UK.

foriegn aid is just a another way you lefties salve your own consiences to get a feel-good-factor "oh look at me I help the poor in Africa or wherever"
"just a little curious as to why overseas aid seems to be so important, I mean I could understand it from Noo Labour but the Tories"

Geezer "aid" is payments by us to further our influence in other countries and promote our business interests in/with those countries - guess Tories see it as investment rather than charity - with most investments making returns over time.
"aid" is payments by us to further our influence in other countries and promote our business interests in/with those countries "

a bribe or a sweetener is the usual terminology
///I could understand it from Noo Labour but the Tories" ///

Perhaps that just means you don't understand the mechanics of overseas aid as well as George Osborne and The Treasury?
