How many of us think the Queen should abdicate in favour of Prince Charles?

I think she sould abdicate but not sure whether Charles or William should take the throne. However if she decides not to, and considering women live longer than men, and how long her mother lived, she could well outlive Charles

To me the key aspect of this issue is the question of who should decide whether the Queen (or any other UK monarch) should abdicate. What would be the position if the people and/or Government thought she should abdicate, and she didn't want to; or vice versa - she wanted to step down, and we didn't want her to? I think the reason the Queen has just more or less stated that she doesn't intend to abdicate is that if it was perceived that abdication was in response to popular or Government pressure, then it would be a first tentative step towards a democratically chosen/elected Head of State.

Certainly not - we may well have differing opinions on the monarchy and whether to keep them but as it stands we are stuck with them and the rules that apply...so the Queen stays until we totrally change the role of the monarchy in this country

Abdication is PART of the rules. Its been done at least three times (edward viii, richard ii, edward v as well I think) and is constitutional. I was just mooting the question to seee if people wanted to retire her. She is getting on a bit, after all.

You've misinterpreted my answer and perhaps I was not clear...I was responding more to GeoffBob: I do not believe the Queen will ever abdicate of her own free will (and of course I accept that she can choose to do so) so until such time as she changes her mind (which I think never) she will be Queen.
