i was working in a london hospital many years ago, when for about 2, 3 ,years the carnival was described as the nottinghill riots, our hospital was the nearest from nottinghill and we received many many injured people civilians and police and innocent bystanders, all medical and nursing staff were working, it did improve, hope it does not go back to those times

Bit wet to go and see the carnival today, but I've done so before without quaking in terror at the thought of gangs linked to drugs and violence who might clash during the carnival (has this ever happened?)

A report by the London Development Agency on the 2002 Carnival estimated that the event contributes around £93 million to the London and UK economy. (That was 8 years ago, so todays figure is probably considerably more).

As some of you know, I work as a Tube Train Driver on the Central Line, which covers Notting Hill, and I was working today, and I must say, that most (not all, but most) of the people that go by train, and that counts in the thousands, are well behaved, and looking to have a good time.

I certainly hope it continues.

R1 you may not have stated it outright but you do make it very clear by the tone of your comments... anyways back to the point - no the carnival should not be banned it does more good than harm and most people have good day out without being the victim or perpetrator of crime. As said the same issue re crime, cost etc etc could be brought up for almost all big events like rock festivals for example.

I also don't believe that the government should be encouraged to start banning celebrations, gatherings or indeed carnivals as it would be going further than the "nanny state" we complain about to something possibly more unpleasant
