No - I don't think I would.
They fly themselves these days.
Berti.....quite an interesting question................what % of the flight is determined by the pilot and how much the computer?

If the computer flies the plane for 90% of the time, then I would be happy for it to continue.

A similar question was "do we need doctors" to give routine anaesthetics and could not nurses be trained to do this. The answer is yes and it is being done in the UK and has been done in the USA for decades.

So why not?
Michael o leary is a bit of a nutjob and this (if he`s being serious) shows how he is prepared to put profit ahead of safety. It would never happen anyway so maybe he`s just having a laugh
The plane could theoretically complete the entire journey by itself....

That said not sure if I'd be keen knowing it was being flown by a member of the cabin crew in the event of the pilot being incapacitated.

Can't see this as a saving either as if the cabin crew are trained up to be pilots surely they'll (deservedly) want a pay hike.

No.
I think this is another publicity stunt along the lines of charging for the loos and making fat people pay double. Since planes still manage to crash when there are two pilots on board, I don't think sacking one of them would be a great idea.
Think you`re right jno. When Mr O`Leary makes such ridiculous statements, it brings publicity to his airline

Yep - although Mr O'Leary is well known for cutting costs to the bone - I too beleive that it was a publicity stunt .

Airplanes can fly by auto pilot for most of the journey - however auto pilots cant land the plane , without input from someone on the flight deck .

His idea is to have speciallly trained cabin crew to land the plane in an emmergency ; should for example the pilot suffers a heart attack .
That is probably fine, in a situation like that - however what if the emmergency is something that causes the aeroplane to be tumbling out of the sky - would you be content for a ' specially trained cabin crew ' to be on the flight deck , possibly on his/her own , or would you prefer another pilot
If there is an emergency the workload on the flight deck is extremely high - even with something as uncomplicated as a go-around. You need two pilots. Many aircraft can land themselves automatically though it they have category 3 landing capabilty
correction - capability
O'leary has a habit of suggesting these sorts of things for effect. Remember the charge for the loo or ripping out the seats idea. All splashed Ryan air all over the media. No such thing as bad publicity they say! I don't think for a minute he's serious, I for one would not want an empty seat up front!
interesting point you made sqad, re nurses giving anaestetics, do you mean local or general, have you actually witnessed this ? does it occur in most hospitals in the uk
anneasquith.....no, I am referring to general anaesthesia and yes I does occur in the UK, they are called anaesthetic nurses and depending upon their experience, intubate and control general anaesthesia.

This is far more developed in the USA than in the UK.
His public deliberations save him a fortune in advertising.
Amanda is a sedation and senior dental nurse and has worked with us since 1990. She qualified as a dental nurse in 1994 and acquired a further qualification in 1996 in dental sedation then gained a qualification in orthodontic nursing
sorry, this on the web-site and this is what what my daughter does...sedated people , maybe not the same as an anaesthetist but similar I would have thought?
way off topic I am..sorry, I can't stand the little bugger, he carries a huge amount of LMS...with him
sqad, thanks for info. one last point though, is the nurse totally in charge of the procedure ie no anaesthetist present ?
