LABOUR BREAKS ITS PROMISE
In order to pass, the Lisbon treaty had to be ratified by all 27 member states. Although the treaty was rejected by Irish voters in June 2008, it received overwhelming support in a second referendum in the Irish Republic on 2 October 2009.

The people of Britain , on the other hand, were not given the chance to vote on the treaty, despite the Labour Government having promised a referendum. The Tories also promised a referendum but reneged when the treaty was ratified.

Blair should be sent to the war crimes tribunal, as a conviction would be almost certain, Brown the incompetant should be forced to pay out all the pensioners he robbed out of his own pocket. that would be justice indeed

Wrong on both counts, Prudentia.
There is no agreement among international lawyers that the Iraq war was illegal; indeed, some of the most prestigious of them believe the whole concept of an "illegal" war to be nonsense. Consequently, what crime would Blair be charged with, never mind convicted of?
Brown did not "rob pensioners", he taxed the profits gained from the investments made by pension fund managers. I certainly have not heard that the current coalition has any plans to change that, have you? So, maybe Camerlegg should stump up, too, eh? Given that every WORKER has to pay tax on his/her earnings, why on earth should UNEARNED income be granted freedom from taxation?

I think Quzmonster that the concept of an illegal war is generally accepted. What is held to be nonsense is the idea that a war can be illegal in the sense that a robbery can be illegal.

But back to the original question.

The Labour government said that there would be a referendum on the proposed European Constitution. When this was rejected in other countries this was hacked down into a much less important agreement the Lisbon treaty.

The Europhobes of course love to paint the story this way not because they wanted an vote on the treaty bur because they wanted to leave the EU.

Of course they had much more chance of winning a No vote on the treaty that than winning a vote on actually leaving the EU so they were upset as their chance of mischief making was lost.

So upset that many of them are still fighting yesterday's battles it seems.

Why am I so pro-EU?

I work for a major US company - they are not interested in having a British base - they are interested in having a European base and Britain is their choice

If we left the EU - they would leave Britain or at least vastly reduce the operation size here - I have absolutely zero doubt on that issue and I have little doubt that would be the case for many many others.

You could kiss goodbye to an awful lot of the financial community that would relocate to Frankfurt too
