Anyone can say "Sorry", it is very easy to do and can mean little.

Maybe Sorry would be enough if he had trod on someones toe, but he is head of an evil organization that has ruined the lives of thousands of young people.

And this has been done by the very people who are supposed to be looking after your moral well being and supporting you, not taking advantage of you.

To me they are an organization still stuck in the middle ages with their outdated views and stupid clothes and old fashioned services.

I am surprised (and upset) that so many people are willing to follow them (and fund their corrupt life style).

They are no better than the mafia.

The Pope has only apologised now because the media has brought to light the wicked things that have gone on. If it wasn't common knowledge I doubt a word would have been said.

Over a period of nearly 50 years a nationnal government shipped children between the ages of 23 and 14 to foreign countries where many of them faced abuse and being unpaid child labour.

I wonder if anyone had the same kind of "so what ?" reaction when the head of the country's government aplogised some 40 years after the practice ended ?

I thinl the Pope's apology is a sop to the massive negativity his visit has caused - I doubt he really understand why people feel as strongly as they do, simply because he does not live in the same world as the rest of us.

In the same that premiership footballers are not used to hearing the word 'No', so priests as so venerated, that some really do believe they can do as they wish. The Pope, as the extreme example of this veneration, has no concept of what real life is like for anyone - much less people abused by those who are his cohorts.

Saying sorry after x amount of years does nothing for the people who needed support and understanding years ago. And this Pope was not the one who was in command at the time of the offences. Apologising for an entire organisation is merely a sop, It's like the Allies apologising to the Japanese for their part in the war, how false can you get. Do the victims of these crimes feel better for that.

the naming and defrocking of the paedophile priests and the naming and defrocking of the priests who sheltered them and an assurance that this will not happen again.
we've probably all seen by now the Stephen Fry / Anne Widdecombe exchange when she says that the catholic church at the time didn't know any better, neither did judges or local authorities and he say well if you didn't then what is the church for? Each priest needs to come forward and take PERSONAL responsibility for what he did.

How about public punishment for those who did it and for all those Bishops who not only covered it up but encouraged futher abuse by transferring them again and again to new parishes.This includes the Pope himself because he failed to take positive action against those concerned .
None of this will happen because to do so is an addmission that their belief is wrong and if it's wrong in that respect then it may be wrong in it's other teachings.

What I want is for the Pope to acknowlege that he and his priests are not above common law, and to stop hiding behind cannon law as a suitable investigation.

How would it be if everyond decided that their own idea of the law was suitable, and because they have their own system, they don;t need to trouble themselves with the checks and balances that the resit of us manage to live by.

The clergy is not above the law - i want the Pope to stop pretending that they are, and only doing the minimal amount to try and head off this massive crisis of faith in his church.

On the radio today a women described being raped by a priest in her own home when she was 13yrs of age. She said her mother entered the just as he finished but still did not condem the priest. She just couldn't bring herself to condem the priest or the church and that is the same reason why thousands of Catholics turned up to cheer the Pope today.
However I believe it is not just RCs, devout believers of any doctrine be it religious or political refuse to accept any facts that go against their beliefs . Look at do-gooders and trade union leaders.

I should have added that it was not until 1992 that the RC church officially accepted the fact that
the earth rotates around the sun, 3000 yrs after the Greeks and most of the world . So those who want them to modernise will have a long wait.
