It was announced today that the boys name Mohammed (and its derivatives) is the most popular boys name to be chosen in Britain. Is the cap on non-EU immigrants futile?

It had only 185 more than the next favourite Oliver and of course non Muslims will use a more varied choice of names for their boys...overall a total non story.

You don't need to worry. The reason why Mohammed and its derivations is the number one name, isn't actually down to an overwhelming influx of Muslims...it's because its an EXTREMELY popular name for male Muslim babies.

I'll break it down thus...if 100 babies are born, and seven of them are Muslim and out of those seven babies, five are called Mohammed (or one of its derivations), an no other name amongst non-Muslims, then the headline is technically correct - but only because there's no western equivalent of 'Mohammed'.

I suppose it used to be 'John' or 'James' but those names fall in and out of fashion. Mohammed doesn't.

So taking those figure, you can say Mohammed is the most popular boy's name in the country, but it stilll only accounts for 5% of all newborns.
> is the most popular boys name to be chosen in Britain

No its not, why dont you read the article. It is the 16th most popular name, but is the top in certain parts of the country.

no, they'd be calling their kids Oliver. Or last year it would have been Jack. Nice that they show a bit of consistency rather than following fads, really
