Given enough time some of them may become long term unemployed. A middle aged man or woman could find it very difficult to find work of any sort. One real consequence of unemployment is depression. Then they'd become eligible for Incapacity benefit and Disability Living Allowance. It might be as cheap to keep them in work.
I seem to recall a Banker deciding to finish work to stay at home and help his wife look after their many children, He signed on and I think got away with it. That to me is a deliberate act and I would object to paying out someone like that to stay at home when he could be out earning his keep.
Here in Germany there exist "One Euro jobs", i.e. jobs that unemployed people can do for one euro (or I think it may be slightly more now) per hour without losing their benefits. This means that small employers who could not otherwise afford to employ staff can use the services of these people at a low cost. This can help people get back into employment. The downside with many employers is that they just see this as a way of getting staff on the cheap and keep them on long-term for very little money - rather against the spirit of the idea. I don't know the details of the new proposal, but it could have some merits if not abused.
I'm fed up with this thread now.
The lefties think everyone is 'entitled' to state money whilst the rest don't like contributing to keeping able bodied people in idleness when there are 'community' projects that could be carried out by them.
It's like the 2 ends of a magnet; will never ever meet!
I am posting my opinion-havent read through -not being ignorant but have just one thought -cant bl00dy come quick enough !! Its long overdue and the thought of the workshy bad back charlatans having to prove themselves thrills me as I know loads who work it -I cant report them (value my life) but man if they can go out for days pheasant beating and chop logs and garden (even have regulars) then I simply cant wait,Hate cheats -hate ive worked to let them lie and vegetate and drink tea or cider or simply take the p!ss.Hate they think benefits is their pay.Love the fact the charalatans will be rumbled and will have to sweat it out like the rest of us,How can you argue with that ??Hey I even slug it out as a cleaner/housekeeper everyday even although I dont have to but nowt wrong wit a good work ethic I say !!
I have been unemployed for a year since being made redundant. I got contribution based jobseekers for 6 months and then...NOTHING. I have worked since 1971 and have never been out of work until now. I couldn't get any benefits because my OH has a job. I apply for jobe EVERY DAY and so far no luck. So what category of unemployed person do I come under?
Are you still signing to get your NI credit? You should be being given priority but I think you are probably doing more on your own that the thickos at the jobcentre would do (that may seem like a sweeping generalisation but i deal with them through work and dealt with them when i was made redundant, none of them get out of their fancy swivel chairs to help anyone)
Its about time worthless layabouts were made to work. Im 68 and work in a take away/bakery there is one family that comes in every day to buy take away sandwiches and pastries / cakes for their lunch and dinner they buy their 5 kids lunches which they take up to the school for them ( because they dont like school dinners) they spend at least £25 for their lunch every day. they have never had a job between them. how can they afford it? because they scounge of the goverment and people like me who have worked all our lives. A takeaway is a special treat for me and my hubby. people like them make me sick.
/// But of course I haven't included you perhaps, who may be working 'cash in hand' while still claiming benefits ///
How do you correlate my disagreeing with you with presumptions of this kind of criminal activity ?
Presuming in this manner only underlines my claim that your "observations" are based on personal bigotry and dubiously sourced "facts".
THIS is a prime example of your unprovoked rudeness btw (there was no 'name calling' or questioning of *your* honesty in my post).
I agree kendra, some of them cannot grasp the basics of economy, they expect more and more for nothing. It's time to take on the long-term work-shy and put them to seasonal work, farm help, snow shifting, litter picking, anything to get them off benefits for a while. It may (tongue in cheek) give them something to feel proud of, a sense of satisfaction? I suspect a lot of these people haven't had a job at all since leaving school.
LMAO at all these outrageous presumptions and generalisations about people whose backgrounds you probably know nothing about (ie. their actual circumstances).
Hey Kendra - how does it feel then being guilty of receiving 'stolen' money ?
Maybe you should make a stand for your beliefs and refuse to serve them.
That would be the honourable thing to do wouldn't it ? ;-)
@ Noth - my handbag is full of tar - talking of which, it looks as if they've stopped (?)
