Why should a Latvian woman (or any other EU country) have the right to (sham) marry in Ireland (or UK) and then give the right for their Asain (or African) husband to stay in that country.

Surely this is a massive abuse of the system.

Of coure it's an abuse of the system. The problem isn't the law, it's enforcing it.

If we had reciprocal arrangements with any country (say, the old Commonwealth) the same would apply, surely - as jno says, the laws have to be applied and enforced, making it far less easy for this sort of thing to happen.

Because the EU has expanded to so many European countries its now almost impossible to make our borders safe from illegal immigrants. To have controls to protect just Britain is now useless as Europeans have free right of movement within the EU. Non European immigrants who have set up home somewhere else in Europe will be free to come to Britain if they dislike their original choice and do it quite legally.

It doesn't need a crystal ball to envisage a world without borders and they will mostly flee to an open country like Britain where they can get huge rewards such as free health and housing..

Why should we spend our money setting up Police and Customs facilities over in France?

France should be spending money making their borders more secure, preventing these immigrants from entering France in the first place.

Canada is a big empty area with a small population so maybe they are not all that bothered.
A bit like the US a hundred years ago and even Australia after WW II who paid us , UK citizens , to go out there.
